Would we be mad to start a new business and what does Switzerland need?

Hi, I am looking at buying a property, that happens to have a comercial property attached, ( was once small cafe/restaurant ) a bit run down but not too bad, it was not what attracted me to the property, and at first I thought we would just incorporate back into living area, but it has got me thinking now,of working for ourselves, and I wonder can anyone point me in the direction of where to read up ( in english if poss) on setting up your own business here, what you need to do etc, and what kind of business is not a bad idea, what is ch crying out for or would we be mad to go down this road

Sounds like a cool opportunity, I don't know about the legalities but wanted to wish you luck if you decide to go for it! I think it's a good idea.

Do a search for "starting business" in this section http://www.englishforum.ch/business-entrepreneur/ and read for a couple of days.

Re: would we be mad to start a new buz, and what does CH need

Business ideas (based on posts read here):

- A shirt laundering and ironing service that completes the job within a day
- A "delivery waiter-in" service - a person who waits in for the plumber or delivery person
- A service providing someone to do your laundry in the middle of the working day - so you're not stuck with weekend and Friday-night laundry-room slots
- A gym that opens early enough that you can go before work
- A combined DVD rental and dial-a-pizza shop
- A cheese home delivery service

Cheers,
Nick

Since you first wanted to add the comercial part into the living area, it can not be huge, right? Well, it all dependends on how big it is, and what your background / speciality is.

Wow. I'd do one of those things I've always been wanting to do, mostly because no one else has done it properly. (I like all the above but I'm sure you have your own as well... )

A proper sandwich shop would be a great thing, made as you want it, the Walkers salt and vinegar has already been extremely well copied by Zweifel....

As an accountant I would make one observation, good locations tend not to be the site of run down business premises! The wrong location is a very common reason for retail type businesses to fail. So before you commit yourself to starting a particular type of business, take the time to research why the previous business failed, this should help you identify what kinds of business are best suited to your location.

Good luck with that,

Jim.

Re: Would we be mad to start a new business and what does Switzerland need?

Thanks for all the replies and idea's, I think , I would not go down the cafe/ fresh food road, but other idea's are usefull.
I have 3 properties in my sights now, only 1 with commercial property, but some one just told me that we are mad to buy at any rate in the present financial climate, so too be honest I am not sure what way to go., so off topic, but is lumbering yourself with a morgage mad right now ?

grumpygrapefruit, I know what you mean, but I often wish there was one, with lumps of wensledale on the side do you have any ?( probably spelt wrong)

Jim2007, very good point, I would certainly not give up my job on the idea.

Re: Would we be mad to start a new business and what does Switzerland need?

I was in Hawes over Easter and bought a lot of Wensleydale straight from the factory. Prehaps I packed it incorrectly and it doesn't fly very well but it just didn't taste the same back here.
