Freelance translator plus part-time job or not?

Hi,

I am a freelance translator and as I posted in the forum on businesses, I would like to move to Switzerland for continuing my activity in this country. I chose it because my boyfriend is searching for a job there too (as patent attorney).

According to your point of view, is it possible to make a living only working as a freelance translator or do I have to search for other possibilities? I mean, do I need to integrate my freelance job with another part-time job?

I ask you this question because in Italy taxes in my case are very high and I find a bit difficult to make a living here.

Thank you very much!
Eliana

Re: Freelance translator plus part-time job or not?

I would say it depends on where you are in your career. If you already have an established client base, then you may be able to organise your time to take on a part-time job as well. If you are just starting out, it's not ideal e.g. to have to turn down a job from a new client (who may not return) because you have to go to your other job; in the early days, availability is pretty important IMV

OTOH if your question was how do tax rates in Geneva compare with Italy, I'm afraid I don't know, but it's a slightly different question from can you freelance part-time

Re: Freelance translator plus part-time job or not?

Thank you for your reply eng_ch!

Yes, I have already many clients, EU and non-EU, with still a percentage of translation centers. I started the translation activity about April 2008 and this is the third year as freelance translator.

I can say that after all these years, my writing and translating speed has raised up and therefore the part-time job can really be a possibility. It is a question of organizing time according to the needs of both the jobs.

Hi antipodeansailor!

This is interesting even if I do not have a specific experience in admin field. Thank you very much indeed!

Re: Freelance translator plus part-time job or not?

Here I come with a new question: I am searching translation centers in Switzerland but I have found only a few.

Is there a sort of list which include them all as it happens with Italian companies based in Switzerland that are listed in a file which you can find in the website of, for example, Italian embassy in Bern?

Thank you for your help,
Eliana
