And I wish I could find any place remotely like that here ! | | | | | English/Irish pubs in CH are in general more expensive per pint (imported beer isnt cheaper than local stuff) than Swiss places. Wine is generally not any cheaper in them than "posh wine bars" (basically the average kind of wine bar you find in Zurich I gues,s barring obviously Eddies Weinstube) i've been in.

Although the reason being is that Denner owns them, and all the wine that is stocked there is the same wine they sell at Denner, plus the furnishings and occasional smiling waitress charges.

| | Re: Switzerlands best pub | Quote: | | | | | Ok, it's not cheap. But I can feel more comfortable with 1 franc tip at a pub then a percentage tip at nicely deco'd, with everyone paying attention to my every detail. In a pub, I am like any other Tom Dick and Harry. I might even come off as an ass for giving to high of a tip in a pub.
So that makes the cost of the Guiness v. Amarone pretentious wine more balanced.
In any case, the Guinness does taste like they refile twice the carbonation thru it then a can of coke at the pubs here. | | | | | Absolutely agree. I can go to the pub in my tracksuit if i feel like it and i wont be out of place. In wine bars i feel like i should dress up nicely and put on makeup. Not that this will stop me going in a tracksuit if i feel like it :P
Biggest advantage of pub in my opinion: You go out there by yourself and somebody will talk to you or you can easily join in some conversation of strangers. Try and do that in a wine bar

Pickwick in Zug is the only one I remember being in recently, so I guess that'll have to be my vote. |

| | Re: Switzerlands best pub | Quote: | | | | | best irish pubs anywhere are definitely in New York | | | | | If you want the best Irish pub I've been in, then it has to be The Reel Inn, in Donegal Town - went with a mate, had a chat with four or five guys who drink there at least five nights a week (one guy for the last sixty years!), and the publican played as part of the live music that night (as did a couple who were just passing through town, but had their Irish pipes and fiddle with them).
Best Irish pub I've been to in Switzerland? That would have to be the Shamrock, in Wollishofen (right at the tram terminus). Great location, great building / layout, great publican (Bart - he remembered me on my second visit, even though I was there with different people), they have a weekly pub quiz and, perhaps more relevant to some, they do a great Irish breakfast. I enjoyed one while (sadly) watching the Wallabies get creamed ... Food prices are reasonable, but the price of a pint bites a bit.
Oh, and they open at 'unusual' hours for sports, if something's in a different time zone.
