Fondue recs (with a toddler) in Basel-Stadt

Hi Everyone-

We just relocated to Basel and are living near the Universitätsspital.

We are looking for a restaurant NEAR us (within walking distance) to have fondue with our 2.5yo toddler for those of you without kids this means quick service, casual and somewhat tolerant of him wandering around the place between bites...

We have tried Walliserkanne but found it was an utter disaster with him (too quiet and WAY too many wine glasses on the table, never mind expensive).

Is there a less formal option anyone might recommendation?

Thanks!

Re: Fondue recs (with a toddler) in Basel-Stadt

Buy a fondue kit and do it at home when toddler is in bed??

I don't know, but hot cheese or oil or bouillon and fidgety toddlers ... mmmhhh. And frankly not so many restaurants are tolerant of a wandering toddler when there are pots of this boiling stuff being carried about ...

Although we took our eldest to Walliserkanne a few times when he was 2 and 3 (before we lived here and were just visiting so wanted something close to hotel) and it was ok .. and very loud and packed on one occasion - but we sat him in a highchair so definitely no wandering ...

yeah.. I think we are both just sort of sick of cooking all the time, havent been to many places to eat 'out' and was hoping for some fondue for my birthday.. just hoped to find a toddler friendly place which might happen to also serve fondue..

Re: Fondue recs (with a toddler) in Basel-Stadt

Oh I get that!

Mmmhh .. well toddler friendly .. we ate out a lot in Basel when we used to visit here before we moved over (and our son was between 18 months to about 4 years) and I have to say that the one place we always tried to go to at every visit was a little local restaurant in Erasmusplatz .. I don't even know the name .. if you get off the number 36 bus going in the direction of Badischer Bahnhof it is on the right as you walk up to the front of the bus ... hope that makes sense.

They were always lovely with my son .. would take him into the kitchen to "make" his ice cream desert and were happy with him generally having a wander (oh and had tripp trapp high chairs too ..) I think we ate fondue there once but all this was about 5 years ago so I would check it out first before booking .. given that it is your birthday and all.

I have brought up 4 children, two in Switzerland, and from experience you cannot allow your child to "wander about" in any restaurant. Maybe in MacDonalds it might be acceptable, but in any Swiss restaurant it is very much frowned upon.

You need to find a teenager to babysit for you. Look on the notice boards in your nearby Coop and Migros shops, or maybe advertise there for one.

Maybe I'm being blind but I can't find fondue on their current menu. I'm pretty sure this will be the place ecb was thinking of though as I get the bus from here every morning and have not noticed another "traditional Swiss" restaurant. Mind you, it's pretty early in the morning and my eyes have barely woken up

Re: Fondue recs (with a toddler) in Basel-Stadt

Thank you Mimi! That must be the one .. I recall the menu changed a lot and often they had specials .. we did have fondue there (checked with otherhalf .. as I say it was in the days when we just visited CH and fondue seemed well .. so .. Swiss .. but now realise best place for fondue is in a mountain restaurant after some suitable snowy excersion ...) It was at least 5 years ago .. but you could always ask.

The website makes it look quite fancy .. recall it being more homely/suitable for a toddler ...

Actually on the theme of suitable snowy excersion .. what about taking bus/train to Wasserfallen, cable cars up the mountain and there are 2 berggasthaus who always serve fondue and welcome children. (One is 5 mins from the cable car, the other is 40 mins walk). Wasserfallen is not as far as you think .. about half an hour from SBB, and at one of the places you can stay overnight (basic accommodation) so when toddler finally dozes off, you can stay up and drink herbal tea/the bar dry/yodel loudly/whatever ...

I'll pop in on my way home tonight and scope out the territory I'll see if it is too fancy and also if they do fondue. I'll report back tomorrow (but please bump the thread if I forget or send me a PM reminder)

Re: Fondue recs (with a toddler) in Basel-Stadt

So, popped in tonight and it seems very child friendly and traditionally Swiss, in fact as we walked in a group of women were playing Jass

Fondue isn't on the menu at the moment but they did say they do it sometimes. It's not sure when they'll do it next though but they normally advertise it on the boards outside and sometimes on the website but not always. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you.

Phew! Worried I was barking entirely up the wrong tree there!
