With them being so close, you could do a quick recce of Mandir and if it looks like the pram's not going to fit just saunter up the road to the Palace.

Whatever you do though, do not let mirfield offer to look after it....if you want it back in one piece that is.

OMGWTFBBQ!! I just remembered. Mandir onion bajis. Lovely scraps of cholesterol. They are scrummy.

I also recommend the chicken madras which is a bit wierd 'cos it's a bit coconutty, but still spicy.

I'm soooooo hungry right now...

Mandir is good in terms of food, but bit small in terms of space. Tandoori palace is spacious.

Not picking on you particularly, but why would anyone choose space over food.

"Yeah, we were invited to go to a 5* Michelin joint, but ended up in MacD's because there was more space"

or

"Food was siht, but by golly, we had lots of space - thumbs up!"

Re: Mandir vs Indian Tandoori Palace - Basel

Well.....if anyone cares, we went with Mandir, excellent recommendation! Showed up at 1730 and they went out of their way to shuffle a chair or two around to make room, very very friendly welcome!

Food was great too - despite me deciding to be adventurous and having something I never heard of before (Chicken Chettinad?) and instantly regretting it as it is (I learned with the first bite) the hottest curry they do. The customer service was great, though - I asked for some yoghurt to cool it a little and they offered on several occasions to make me something else to replace it, which I refused as it was my fault, not theirs......but nice to be offfered anyway!

Top place - nice people and if you stay away from the Chettinad, great food too

Thanks all

Re: Mandir vs Indian Tandoori Palace - Basel

Ok, I have been looking for a good indian restaurant in Basel for the past six months with no luck. Really surprising given the number of Indians (immigrants and ex-pats) that live and work here.

Given, your choices I would go with Mandir, Its a little greasy but some of the chicken and vegetarian plates are decent.

If you ever want to do a quick take-away indian, try aggarwals near claraplatz...its very close to "ghar ka khana" which in hindi means home-cooked food....just my two cents.

Popping up to Basel tomorrow afternoon with Mrs and Jr CC to sift through the ashes of our new house (long story, some of you may remember!) to see if we will EVER move in and will pop out for a minor celebration meal afterwards and I get to choose the cuisine....yipee!

Given where said new house is, I see that both of these Indian places are close by and in a straight fight between the two, which one would you locals choose? Mandir seemed to score well in the other threads I searched out here, but they weren't "forced preference" questions Also, both score pretty well on Trip Advisor

Final question is a bit specific - are either of them unsuitable for a pram? I actually fancied Aladin for Lebanese food, but figured that we'd need to leave Tiny by the tram stop if we went there!

Thanks

As we have another visit to the clusterf**k which is our new Basel pad/building site this afternoon, we shall be revisiting the Mandir and it made me remember adrianlondon's brave boast...

So.....did anybody manage to eat the Chettinad?

For me.....korma all the way tonight

I'm in Brazil at the moment, but once I'm back, when you next come to Basel, I'm happy to come to the Mandir and eat my words, I mean a chettinad. I'm pretty sure I'm going to regret this, but hey, at least I won't be able to say that every meal in Basel leaves no impression
