Re: Cheap Eats in Basel

What's your idea of "cheap"?

There are a variety of Indian and Thai stores I've seen which have a small steam table set up around lunch and dinner time, usually can get a good meal for under 10chf, typically made by the proprietor of the store. There is one at Birmansgasse (along the 1 tram line) and another that's across the river, about a block off the river from Untererrhienweg (something like that). Unfortunately I can't remember exactly where as I stumbled upon it when visiting friends.

Also, any day time except Sunday, Coop, Migros and Manor all have self-serve restaurants, you simply pay by weight (and type) of what you take, or they'll have special of the day. I think usually I get by for about 15chf (ish) from those, with soup, salad and bread along with a drink.

If you're into Döner kebap, there are plenty of shops around for that too, after an evening out, I find the "döner box" to be more than plenty and costing only about 10chf.

Hopefully that's at least enough to get you started, and spark some ideas / memories of spots others have seen.

That'll be the Egg-Lädeli

It's at the corner of Oetlingerstrasse and Breisacherstrasse.
