Small, cozy and really “italian” restaurant in zurich

Having recently "landed" in Zurich from Italy as an expat, I would warmly recommend to all the Italians and the friends of Italy in this Forum the small but excellent “Pizzeria Trattoria da Michele”, whose philosophy could be summarized in the short statement: “Italian cuisine with homemade ingredients, without compromises”. It is conveniently located in the zone of Binz-Wiedikon, near to the Uetliberg railway station (UetlibergStrasse 109, 8045 Zurich; tel. 043 960 03 46- closed on Sunday).

As an Italian, I am immediately able to understand if the “Italian dishes” abroad are made according to what our mothers and wives prepare for us at home, and most often the best I can find is something that can be labeled “Italian style”. When dining at the restaurant “Da Michele” this is not the case. And the reason is very simple: the key ingredients and raw materials come from Italy or are purchased from Italians which produce them in Zurich, in compliance with the specifications of our ancient tradition. The quality is therefore unbelievably high.

Just to give some specific examples: Michele’s “ravioli di magro” (
maultaschen (?) filled with cheese, pumpkin or spinachs) are simply amazing, because they are home-made and always fresh. The same holds for “tagliatelle”, a kind of ribbon-like pasta that is processed in Italian houses according to secret recipes that every mother trades to her daughter, and so on… The Pizza section of the menu is very rich and one appreciates immediately the quality of the real Italian tomato sauce and mozzarella, that I have seen badly imitated in Zurich, sometimes with very terrific outcomes.

I am not a meat enthusiast, but I see that meat dishes are very praised by other clients.

Coming from Sicily, “don Michele” (the owner) gives his best in cooking typical dishes of Southern Italy, sometimes very tasty and very different from Swiss food. Who is not a fitness addict should not miss the Italian dessert (a caloric bomb) at the end, and I suggest to conclude the meal with a real Italian expresso coffee and a small glass of “mirto”, a typical liquor from our islands, made from an aromatic plant (mirth).

The restaurant has been opened recently and is still undergoing some upgrade, but can host about 20 people in a very cozy and Italian atmosphere. At noon is known and appreciated by the employees of the neighboring banks, while in the evening it is more frequent to find it hosting also groups of Italian friends, driven by the nostalgia for the Mediterranean sun.

The owner Michele speaks a good German, and is always courteous and helpful in providing advice on the Italian dishes in the menu. He is assisted by Alexandra, a gorgeous, “Pamela Anderson-class” (or, for the Italian readers, “Valeria Marini-class”
) blonde Hungarian lady, who adds a touch of Eastern European charm to the environment.

Enjoy your meal!
