Re: Restaurant review: Desperado in Höngg

It is not even Mexican food by my definition. It is not even Tex-Mex
by my definition. It is not good at all.

Re: Restaurant review: Desperado in Höngg

The food is not at all authentic. The most authentic Mexican food in zürich, besides homemade, is Tres Kilos in seefeld. However, my husband and I had our wedding reception in the big room at the Höngg Desperado and it was an awesome party. The service was really great and I would highly recoment it for a big party, they were super easy to work with, very laid back and flexiable for swiss standards!!

Re: Restaurant review: Desperado in Höngg

I go to Desperado because I enjoy the snacks - you can't ruin french fries and garlic or bean paste bread, right? Also I enjoy the long island ice tea.
My mates go there because they like a good burger and the girls because they like the "girly" drinks.
It has been suggested in a thread last year that there are better places in the city for Tex-Mex though. But that isn't a criterion for me and my friends so I can't comment on that.
If the food isn't spicy enough and the red and green chili sauces can't fix it, ask the waiters. They sometimes have Dave's Insanity under the table.

I made a reservation in Desperado Höngg in August and was explicitely asked if I want to be seated in smoker or non-smoker.

Re: Restaurant review: Desperado in Höngg

I seem to remember a few months ago we had an EF get-together in Desperados in Wiedikon. That was good fun. No one will get excited about the food, but it was a great night. Let's face it, that's where these kind of establishments excel: a group party.

I've tried Mosquito in Bremgarten (by the bridge) a couple of times, not bad. My American friend (lived in Austin for a while) swears by it.
I would also swear by Mosquito we stayed in Bremgarten for a week whilst looking for apartment and it was so good we ate there twice. The way the food is presented is great too.

Re: TexMex restaurants - rating

If you can stand it, I'd say go to Geneva...

It's called "Manana" (I guess it's hard to have an n-yea or tilde on their sign) right by the rail station, in a shady part of town past the McDonalds on a side street.

the website is in french/english and a bit corny.

http://www.manana.ch/NEW2003/home.htm

The have a leery but nice Mexican guitarist (no he does not wear a sombrero). Their chiles are spicy, we loved the nachos, the chimichangas and enchiladas. Just right portioning, and not too too pricey considering the yummi-ness (unlike Tres Kilos in ZH is expensive but not good) but standard swiss price expectation.

I'd give Manana a 9/10. We didn't try any alcoholic drinks so somebody else has to be the guinea pig...

Papa Joe's is poor in comparison to manana, I don't know how you can give it 8/10.... yeesh

A further note, not sure this is here but I tried the beef fajitas at Movie (In Zurich) and it was the first place I have been in CH where they got the beef mostly right. Unfortunately, they didn't really get the accesories right (too few and not good).

They used to do a good Ostrich kebab there...

I am not sure about your choice of accessories though, was it the cufflinks or clutch bag that didn't quite match the beef ?

Re: [Zurich] TexMex restaurants - reviews & ratings

Has anyone already visited 'TexMex' near Letziground in Zürich (formerly an Indian restaurant named 'Spice Route')?

Re: [Zurich] TexMex restaurants - reviews & ratings

why don't you get me and some other friends together to open a good one.
out of your list i have no others to add. they all suck.

we could also use a Katz's Deli here. My son wants to do that but I explained that the curing of the meat and importing regulations (nevermind the freshness) would make it nearly impossible

missing tex mex/mexican food lots

Re: [Zurich] TexMex restaurants - reviews & ratings

There is a stand in Bern at Bärenplatz which is quite good. I think it's open 3 days a week, maybe more, definitely on Saturdays.

I've been to 5-6 Tex-Mex places in Bern, and this is the only one worth returning too. They also have a limited amount of decent Mexican ingredients for sale that aren't to be found elsewhere.

Tres Amigos in Bassersdorf is an excellent Mexican restaurant. How authentic they are is something I cannot tell, but that it is a good place is what I can say !

Löwen, Schaffhauserstr. 116, Glattbrugg is a self-declared Mexican Restaurant. Its authenticity is rather doubtful, its excellency however is not. Good meals, good wines, and a good service done by waiters whose eyesight is far more than the usual 120cms !

Restaurant Mexicano and Cuban bar was recommended to me by a Mexican friend and we have always had good food and service there. It is on Hirschenplatz in Niederdorf and has a website www.bei-tony.ch
I agree. Have always been satisfied with my meal and service there.

Re: [Zurich] TexMex restaurants - reviews & ratings

We're desperate for some Mex or Tex-Mex in or around Zurich. We found Tres Kilos to be awful (We went twice to make sure it was truly bad...it was). The place in the Niederdorf was pretty good, but a bit grimy.
I'm wondering if anything new has opened in the past few months?

Re: [Zurich] TexMex restaurants - reviews & ratings

As a former inhabitant of Southern California, Mexican and TexMex in Zürich has been difficult to find. One of the previous posters mentioned La Fonda in Basel with a 7/10 rating. I have to say that, if and when you have the opportunity to go to Basel, it is worth the effort to dine at La Fonda. http://www.lafonda.ch/en/home

The principals are from the Western US. I thought something was odd when they served authentic black beans with my meal. It was then that the wife introduced herself to me and explained that they import their black beans from the US. The atmosphere is great, the food is authentic Mexican, and the place is clean.

There's a very good Tex-Mex restaurant in Interlaken named El Azteca. Great margaritas and fairly authentic Mexican food. I have been there three times in the past year and my wife and I think it's great.

Yeah, this place sucks. I went there when there about 4 months ago and tried out the sampler plate and 2 of the 4 items were horrible.
