Grilling in Zurich Does anyone know if it is okay to have a mini grill in the park in front of Chinagarten Zurich? I have the type that is a 1-time use and would like to grill some hotdogs for a picnic some weekend. |
Re: Grilling in Zurich I think you can grill pretty much anywhere switzerland. People seem to grill all along the lake, including around chinagarten. |
Re: Grilling in Zurich Yes BUT put something under it that keeps it off the ground. It's shocking the amount of dickheads that just light the barbecue directly on the grass and the heat transfers straight through the metal tray killing the grass underneath. Apparently, the grass will then be completely destroyed with no hope of it growing back and has to be reseeded. |
Re: Grilling in Zurich In principle it's allowed as long as you don't damage anything (burnt holes in the grass) or interfere with others' use of the space (smoke in people's eyes). |
Re: Grilling in Zurich I don't know Chinagarden. Around the Bodensee they have lots of areas where people can barbeque, just bring their own coals, or set up their disposable ones on relevant brick area. Plenty of bins in park areas too. |
Re: Grilling in Zurich In principle barbaque and grill not allowed but braai. ;) |
Re: Grilling in Zurich Have you been there? People are bbq-ing there all over the place. On sunny days, the place is like the 1960's Ruhrgebiet. It's a bit of a nuisance at such a scale IMO. While a BBQ is always nice, ask yourself if the place needs another throw-away BBQ being lit-up. And please, take all the trash with you afterwards... |
Re: Grilling in Zurich Is it allowed to grill on an apartment balcony in Zurich? |

Re: Grilling in Zurich I do it from time to time, AFAIK it is not explicity forbidden in our Hausordnung and nobody ever complained. I think general common sense rules apply here - e.g. check if your neighbor's balcony has clothes hanging before making smoke etc... :-) Of course if the landlord forbids it in the contract, then you have to comply... |
Re: Grilling in Zurich My neighbour just started up her grill on the balcony. It gave off so much smoke that I thought her apartment was on fire. ( which it was not ). She apologised. Said something went wrong:msncrazy: |

Re: Grilling in Zurich I believe you can grill almost anywhere here in Zurich. I think you just have to make sure you protect the lawn underneath. Happy grilling! |
Re: Grilling in Zurich Quote:
I'd say that's the standard rule based on experience, i.e. gas grilling is mostly allowed in balconies but coal/wood is forbidden as it produces much more smoke. If you happen to have a 'loggia' then no grilling (typically). |
Re: Grilling in Zurich Please, when you grill, consider your neighbors and find a way to avoid having lots of smoke blowing in their faces. Also, if you're in a public space, think about cleaning up the coals and other refuse from your grill party. Leave the place as nice if not better than you found it. The Swiss are very conscientous about their public spaces. And, as visitors in this country it would be a shame if we didn't treat it at least as well as the Swiss do. |

Also, anyone who believes that a gas grill produces less smoke than charcoal or wood is seriously deluded. Tom |
Re: Grilling in Zurich Agree with Tom here. A charcoal grill produces smoke for maybe the first 15 to 25 mins after lighting. After that if you have excessive smoke, you’re doing it wrong. We live on the one under the top floor and I mostly use a gas BBQ. But I have a picnic size charcoal one for those occasions when I fancy a real BBQ steak. I just check to see the neighbours are not out and about before lighting. Cheers, Nick Quote:
