Wonder if they're still recruiting mules to visit Marktkauf and LeClerc every day....?

E.Leclerc (just up past St Louis) is where I get all my fish from; they're fresh and good value. I don't have a deepfat fryer though so don't make my own fish&chips. Waiting ...

I saw a "cheap" one sold at Super U in Munster, where I pass thru often. I think it was 30 euros or something.

We sell fresh chunky Haddock at Kennedy's as our fish n chips. Served with home cut chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce. All home-made.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Back on topic, Zurich losers ...

Basel's fish & chip shop is open! Fresh (from England) cod and haddock; looks yummy. Sides include mushy peas and curry sauce. Will probably try very soon.

I think prices are: cod 9.50, haddock 10.50, chips 3.50 or 4.50

Maybe a touch cheaper, even.

I may go tomorrow evening, or tomorrow lunch time, or Friday or ... it's just a takeaway so no need for an event. I suppose getting a takeaway from there and walking back to eat it in Markthalle is taking the piss?

Couldn't you reserve a spot on the pavement outside and set up a picnic table? I'm sure they won't mind.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Apparently they do have seating upstairs.

We had a takeaway from there last night and it was DEEEEELICIOUS, the sausages in batter were just like in the UK and the portions were massive!

They even threw in some free extras as it was the opening day.

The prices, in my opinion, are really low. I just hope they make enough money to survive.

However, they may need to check their spelling.....

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

At 15 CHF for haddock & large chips takeaway, they should do fine. The business side should be sorted as it's owned by the same people who run the kebab place a couple of doors away, and they're doing well.

I guess it all comes down to how regularly people go. Although I've always wanted a chippy in Basel, I do think they could struggle Mon-Wed to get enough customers, but I too hope they survive.

Maybe also having chicken & chips will get enough people in. Brits join the fish queue, Mericans the chicken queue. Swiss just push in, see the menu, then shove your way out again.

I'm completely new to British food but seeing how enthusiastic you guys are I may give it a try. Any suggestion about what to try first?
If someone is planning to eat there today or tomorrow for lunch I might join if you don't mind

I plan to pop over this evening around 6:30-7pm.

Get cod or haddock and chips. People will wax lyrical about which is the better fish but the reality is that they taste pretty much the same once put in a decent batter. I usually order whichever isn't ready, as I want freshly cooked fish, but if the ones cooked and ready look a good size I'll just take that.

if you don't like fish, get a saveloy or battered sausage. I don't really like either, but saveloys in particular are unique to British fish & chip shops. They're kind of like a cross between a sausage and a frankfurter (hot dog sausage).

Get a portion of mushy peas to go with the fish. Cover the chips in salt and vinegar; some vinegar on the fish is also ok. I usually like HP brown sauce and might even take a bottle with me this evening to pour over the lot while sitting at the tram stop and eating them.

adrianlondon thanks a lot for the complete "fish and chips for dummies" user's manual!
As evenings out are pretty much... well... out for me at the moment, I wish you a nice dinner for tonight!

I'll give that place a try for sure, maybe tomorrow since now it's a little bit late for lunch already

Goodness, do they even do saveloys? I'm jonesing to try the place now. Saveloys might be interesting to the Swiss since they're from the same derivation as cervelats (cerebrum - pig's brains, although both types don't have much brains in them these days). In my view saveloys are tastier than cervelats, but I do have a slight bias.

All we need now is a decent pie shop...
