Goodness, do they even do saveloys?
Don't know; apart from cycling past, slowly, and getting the fish prices I didn't catch the menu.

This thread was started due to a new (at the time) stall in Markthalle doing fish&chips. He's branched out now and is doing pies with mash, although I've not had a chance to try one yet.

I'll be sure to check the place out before you get there We're planning on eating there tonight as well, but it'll be an early dinner - maybe 5:30. We'll see if you guys know what you're talking about

I had a chicken and mushroom pie and really enjoyed it! At first it looked small and insubstantial, but as I began eating I realize just how good and filling it is!

The mashed taters are thick and homemade and had a nice flavor. He changes out the pies he offers; I'd recommend giving them a try.

Get cod or haddock and chips. People will wax lyrical about which is the better fish but the reality is that they taste pretty much the same once put in a decent batter. I usually order whichever isn't ready, as I want freshly cooked fish, but if the ones cooked and ready look a good size I'll just take that.

if you don't like fish, get a saveloy or battered sausage. I don't really like either, but saveloys in particular are unique to British fish & chip shops. They're kind of like a cross between a sausage and a frankfurter (hot dog sausage).

Get a portion of mushy peas to go with the fish. Cover the chips in salt and vinegar; some vinegar on the fish is also ok. I usually like HP brown sauce and might even take a bottle with me this evening to pour over the lot while sitting at the tram stop and eating them.
You've forgotten the wally!

Yes, they do have saveloys. I just dashed down quickly on the bike and grabbed a couple with some chips (even though I'm not that hungry, we had a substantial semi-liquid lunch at the excellent Waldhaus in Birsfelden).

It's pretty authentic: it was wrapped in paper (although they do have boxes) and they're obviously plundering a UK fish-n-chip-cash-n-carry (the bag had a 'keep Britain tidy' mark). The chips are chunky and soggy (with salt and vinegar); just the way I like them but I'm not sure if that's to Swiss tastes....

Next stop: I'll try the fish. It looked fine.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Just scoffed a portion of cod & chips. Excellent value for 14 CHF. Quality was very good considering where we are; only criticism would be that the fish batter should be more crispy. Chips were perfect; great piece of fish.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Three of us went for dinner tonight and all had the cod 'n chips (and mushy peas).

I don't know - maybe my tastebuds were off, but everything needed salt - a lot of salt. The mushy peas weren't all that great (my English-born husband says that's what they're supposed to be like *shrug* )

The fish itself was good, but it seemed...oily? I don't know how to describe it. It tasted great though, although like adrian said, the batter could use some work.

All that being said, it was a great bargain for the money and I'd probably go back again some time

Adrian - what time were you there? I haven't seen you for two years, so I wouldn't have recognized you unless you came up and introduced yourself

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

I got there about 9:30 I guess; popped upstairs to chat to a friend then got a takeaway and left. I took them home so told them to hold the salt and vinegar which I added myself. Along with a tin of mushy peas and pickled egg (which I shouldn't have bothered with; I'll stick to eating them with salads).

I can't remember who's the real person behind your user-id anyway!

I can't judge the rest, but I had cod & chips yesterday and it was 14 CHF, so your other half got that wrong.

Yeah, the fish prices are just for the fish. Chips are 3.50 extra (or maybe 4.50 if you want a larger portion).

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

I went there today and had cod and chips, which was pretty respectable.

The fish was a touch mushy and not flaky as fresh cod should be. It was also thinner than I was expecting, but tasted decent all the same. I did wonder, given the environmental/ethical and supply concerns surrounding real cod these days, whether it was maybe a substitute. The batter on the fish was pretty decent and the chips themselves were tasty and had a good texture.

They are certainly better than a lot of chippies I've been to in the UK and is a very welcome addition to an otherwise rather limited take-away scene. I also think that the price (CHF 14 for the cod and chips combo) is very fair for the amount and the quality.

The staff was very pleasant, too. I wish them plenty of success. I know I'll be going back regularly.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

For my second visit I went for the haddock (which is my preference, but I was more limited for time last time round).

The haddock was meaty and flaky, just how it should be and cooked to perfection. My opinion of the place has risen from "quite good" to "bloody good". That bit of fish was good enough for Jehovah.

The cod I had Thursday night was a thick hunk of flakey meat. Absolutely perfect piece of fish; just could have had the batter a touch crispier. Seems, from friends who have been today, that they've sussed the batter now.

i had the exact same experience with regard to the fish: thick, flaky but a weak batter.

Spoke to the owner (?) on the way out and I thought he said that it was his first (or second?) day. I'll go back in a week or two and see how things have progressed
