Thousands of brit expats all over Basel must be crying, as who hasn't had the idea to open a fish and chips shop next to Paddy Reillys...

I'm not crying; I'd much rather walk in there, pay 14 CHF and walk out with fish&chips than try to run the bloody place myself.

They were open until 0500 , they have to close at some point.
Forget boring ski resorts, I feel there should be a webcam set up to monitor activity at this place.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

I just went there for lunch with a couple of guys from the office (a Brit from up north and a Romanian).

We sat upstairs (when you do that you get it on a proper plate!). We all had haddock and chips and the general consensus was as we've already seen on this thread: chips chunky and excellent, wonderful flaky fish and slightly weak batter.

The Romanian guy loved it and was amazed by the chips - he will definitely be going back again.

We spoke to the bird there who said they were having some problems with supply since none of this stuff can be sourced in Switzerland; everything's coming from Britain. The glass cabinets did look a bit empty (couldn't see any saveloys or battered sausages), but maybe it was too early in the day.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Luckily you didn't eat all the haddock as I went there around 45 minutes ago and nabbed one.

My batter was crispy, wonderful piece of fish and great chips. I got given a sample of the chicken to try, but I'm so full it'll have to wait until later!

They've probably already got you pegged as the famous adrianlondon and are expecting another review!

The lady told me that she'd been reading this thread when I mentioned all the discussion on EF.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Chicken was good. Coating not full of spices like a KFC would be, but it was moist and cooked well wihich makes it better than KFC. Plus Heuwaage is a lot nearer than Mulhouse.

I'm now off to the land of raw-rish-eaters for a couple of weeks, so please everyone keep this place in business until I get back. Ta.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Best takeaway food I've had in Switzerland in 12 years. Cod and chips twice, with chicken and chips for my daughter. All very yummy. And good value.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

I went back for the second time today and can report that they've improved on the already good quality. The chips were very tasty again, and the batter on the fish was great. I can't fault the fish (haddock) itself this time - flaky and delicious.

As Zeynep says, they're getting better by the day.

@Zeynep: I was the English guy who has the vinegar at home :-) Keep up the great work. It's good to hear you're open Sundays too. I can't wait for my next visit.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Nordsee is totally different and doesn't even compare so don't even bother trying to.

Nordsee is also 5 minutes walk from the basel border by marktkauf.. you don't see people running there for fish and chips.... that may tell you something.

I went to Tramays for lunch today. I tried the haddock and it was perfect! I will be dragging the OH in there soon!

Has anyone tried their hot wings yet?

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

I was just down there for an off-piste takeaway (I'd given myself a strict limit of once-per-week, but rationalized that since we were a man down with adrian away, someone had to step up to the mark), and was quizzing Zeynep about the full english breakfast they had on the menu. She said they weren't quite ready to do this, but when they did they would also offer (whisper it quietly) bacon butties! Using proper back bacon as well. I don't know what kind of effect this will have on Basel's rating in the top cities of the world to live, but I expect it to be mildly positive...
