I've not been in a few weeks but I've heard from friends of mine that recently the fish and chips haven't been good. They said the batter was too heavy and both the fish and chips were cold.

The former probably means the batter was sitting around too long and not aerated/whisked before use and the latter due to the food being cooked in advance and left in the hot store above the fryers (and as the fryers weren't being used, everything got cold). Both problems point to them over-estimating customer flow, which is a pity as it's a self-fulfilling crash.

I'm going to give them another go soon and I hope everyone who gets bad food tells them, and comments that they'd rather wait for freshly cooked stuff than grab pre-cooked cold/soggy fish&chips.
I was there recently and whilst I found the fish nicely done with a lovely crunchy batter (I had Cod) and the chips were as expected, it was let down a bit by being lukewarm (despite hot plates). I also indulged and had a battered sausage which - apart from temperature - was superb.

Now, don't get me wrong, these were the best fish and chips I've had for some time (and I also include the UK in that assessment), but they will need to up their game as far as food temperature goes. Given that fried fish takes so very little time to cook, I don't see why - outside of the peak lunch rush - fish (and perhaps chips) can't be cooked to order. I would certainly be happy to wait, and it seems that others feel the same.

I am in Basel, near Tramways, two weekends/month for one of my hobbies and I would much prefer fresh cooked Fish 'n' Chips than a McBurger, a Mr "not-really-at-all-like Asian-food" or a kebab made out of anything except lamb!

So, dear Tramways, please don't snatch defeat from the jaws of victory...

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

I'll probably go tomorrow. Tuesday evenings aren't likely to be a busy time, so I'll ask for some freshly cooked if they offer me anything that has been standing around.

Perhaps when they don't have this, is when they struggle.

Anyway let's see what Adrian reports back.

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

Oh yes. I'm almost too full and contended to type!

The fish'n'chip gods were smiling on me (and Tramways). The cod & chips was excellent. Everything was freshly cooked, crispy batter and (as always) a huge hunk of excellent fish. Definitely no aftertaste. Although I've only been three times, so it's not a huge sample, each time has been perfect.

I believe the only problem was that the food had been prepared too far in advance. The girl running it was there this evening and she told me that all the staff have been told to only prepare what's necessary, so hopefully this problem has now been fixed.

I need Basel to have a decent chippy and I can't keep it in business on my own, so everyone - go! Do your duty and stuff your faces :-)

That's too bad to hear. I hate to learn about any business failing, especially when it is through ignorance/negligence.

That being said, the fish place in Markthalle is still good, and their pies are fantastic

If you read the entire story, it was brilliant, went downhill, and seems to have gone back to being brilliant. Crisis averted

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

So my first time in a fish and chips shop finally came!
All in all and not knowing exactly what to expect I liked it a lot, the fish was very nice and the not-crispy-as-they-should-be chips were too, I also tried the tartare sauce and liked it as well, only I added salt but not vinegar because I felt it too far from my usual taste/habits/whatever (I normally squeeze lemon on whatever is fried fish or meat).
From the pricing side I think was one of the best value for money Basel can offer: given the fact that a kebab can cost you more that 10 CHF, having fried cod and chips for 14.- is a great achievement

Have to say that besides all this it reminded me of my beloved "fllietto di baccalà alla romana" so I'll definitely go back especially when I feel homesick!

Re: Fish and Chips in Basel. At last.

I have heard so many good reviews on Tramways that now I must go there. My friend told me that you can have cod or haddock as well instead of the standard. Have to try them for lunch as I think for dinner I would be overloaded.

Was it a Monday? It's closed on Mondays.

Though it's been closing down then not closing down for a few weeks now, so maybe the wheel of fortune finally stopped on "Closing".
