I found staff there insincerely friendly with one tall-ish blonde barwoman lingering desperately for tips as someone pays and made my partner feel like they had to leave one as she would hardly give them back their 2 francs!
Well, isn't "your partner" a dainty little flower!

Nothing dainty about having to wait to get your own change back. I get that she isn't on much money but there is no excuse for deliberately withholding customers' money. It is almost as bad as someone putting their hand in my pocket for spare change!

Haven't found one decent Irish/English pub in Zürich. Won't be wasting my time again! Nelson Bar is being discussed in another thread for homophobic staff as well and I found staff there insincerely friendly with one tall-ish blonde barwoman lingering desperately for tips as someone pays and made my partner feel like they had to leave one as she would hardly give them back their 2 francs!
Actually she's a really nice person, and certainly doesn't linger expecting tips.

I really don't know what people expect of a pub - you go in, order a drink and then drink it and that's it.

As for insincerely friendly thing, well it's a two way street isn't it - they are of course real people behind the bar. If you're friendly with them they'll be friendly back. If you're being an arse then professionally they have to be friendly, it just wont be sincere will it?

Nope. And she definitely lingered to keep the change.

We show NFL every Sunday at Kennedy's on the big screen with sound and also redzone on the other TV. Early game in it's entirety, second game, you'll catch first hour or so.

Generally I prefer Kennedy's although it's more of an after-work kind of place than a party place. That can be good or bad depending on your point of view.

If you are alone and like to meet new people I still prefer Nelson where you find a good mix of all nationalities (expats, swiss, exotic countries, people of all kinds and social status) . Movie Bar near Main Train Station is also a nice place to meet people.

What makes you to claim this? I find it quite difficult to meet new people unless there is a planned social gathering.

Grain
Check out this new restaurant and bar on Zurichbergstrasse 71, Zurich. They have an amazing selection of craft beer (12 on tap) plus a very interesting menu. Most of the menu items contain an element of beer in them! Dave the manager is great to talk to and has a vast knowledge of beer from around the world. He also said very shortly they will be showing sports in the bar area, which is a bonus. For the non beer drinkers they have a great selection of spirits and a small but nice wine list. I had the Coq au Biere and the bieramisu, which were awesome, and my wife had the burger which looked amazing. She let me have a bite so that was cool. I'll definitely be heading back, it's a great place to stop by after the zoo, as the tram stops right out side.

You've just joined this forum and made 3 plugs for this place. You might have a bit more credibility if you introduced yourself and decailred any commercial interest, or not, in the establishment.

There is a small one at Oerlikon.
I understand that you need to access the For Sale section to sell your stuff, but please at least post a meaningful answer with information in it when making your 10 posts. Which bar?

Well, he did say it's small. So small in fact that it doesn't show up on the barometer he wants to sell.

El Lokal between Paddys and Kennedys is a good spot for atmosphere.

I also Like Sansi and Cactus on and around Langstrasse

Im a lager drinker so beer taste is a bit lost on me, anything goes! Ex pats, you mean non Swiss or Native English speakers. For an Ex pat crowd Id say thats generally at least 50% of any bar in Zurich

Yes, if you like alternative lifestyle and -music. I think it is a meeting point of wanna-be artists, backpackers, long-term students, people from the political left wing and feminists. If you look just normal you will feel somewhat strange in this place. The bar tries to be unconventional and special but in a intrusive way. If you like it you might also like "Kanzlei". Both are kind of anti fancy-schmancy. Chances are low that you meet there expat bankers and Russian/Eastern Europe women with fur coats

Re: Good expat bars/pubs/drinking spots?

Does anyone know if Nelson's do decent draught guinness? I've checked out the guinness thread, but it's a bit out of date now, and I wouldn't mind a pint or two. Had a few at Paddy's last week but was wondering if Nelson's did it during their happy hour and if it's decent?

Cheers

Last few times I was there, they just had Murphys.
Not sure if it was included in the happy hour price though.

Re: Good expat bars/pubs/drinking spots?

No idea what people mean when they talk about beer quality being better in Bar A than Bar B. One glass of sterile icy fizz 'tastes' much the same as the other. Weissbier offers some consolation but even then, it's hard to drink more than a few pints of anything gassy.

With beer out of the equation it comes down to the craic and/or sites of architectural or historical interest. The International is decent, and I like the history of the old James Joyce hangouts. And that voluminous place.at HB. But if rowdy English pissheads is your thing, the Nelson or Paddy's could be just the ticket but Kennedy's is a bit better.

Hey guys! I'm recently in Zurich. So tired after finishing a big work project before a new year. Finally I'm free and ready to enjoy earned weekends. Looking for some crazy place to really blow my mind. I've been travelling a lot and russian strip bar "Zavist" in St. P impressed me most of all. Is here smth similar?
