| | Best stall for snacks at the Zürich Christmas Market
Hi all,
So, the stalls have been about for a good week or so now: who has had any great experiences with the snacks at the Christmas markets in Zürich city centre?
For me, it was the first try of Nordsee in the HB market, and at last it was a decent fish and chips! The calamari there were also excellent. They have a big resto nearby in HB with lots of interesting dishes, but I preferred the stall as it's more seasonal. Sadly, you can only get a large sized fillet if it is in between two slices of a roll, and not in a box with chips, but I can handle that by simply ordering both meals. I'd suggest avoiding the cocktail sauce though which is a bad marie rose affair.
Next I'm going to go on a mission for the best würst. I can't report back on any fondue-based experiences as it's not for me, but there was a fondue hut that seemed to be extremely popular.
Cheers and happy hunting.
Niko

Nice! Although Google translate gave me "fries war" for frietje oorlog, I now understand after further research that this could in fact be one of the great snacks of our times. Can you confirm that Dutchie at Bellevue serve fries with a peanut sauce, mayonnaise and raw onion?? Do they have kapsalon?? Here is my source/sauce.
Thanks! |

My two favourites are the Indian vegetarian at stall 125 in HB, and the Knoblauchbrot stall by the Singing Christmas Tree at Werdmühleplatz off Bahnhofstrasse. OH's favourite is the Greek gyros at stall 136 outside HB, http://sgouros-food.jimdo.com/ http://www.christkindlimarkt.ch/en/t...ket/#austeller | This user would like to thank Blueangel for this useful post: | |

It's may not be considered much of a snack, but the Baileys stall is great (drinks come with whipped cream!).

Twice my fries have been what must have been the last of a bigger batch leaving me with my bag filled with hard and small pieces for which at Febo I simply would return it for a proper portion, the kroket was so soft that it reminded me of the 70's, and the Dutch Hotdog is a Swiss made product that nobody in the Netherlands ever has seen.
I'd say, skip them next time and go for something nice at another stand, unless you don't mind the lack of quality due to nostalgic reasons.

We had a good experience with the Crepes food truck close to the Christmas tree in Bellevue.
Also the Greek Gyros booth has usually a good quantity-for-money value (I would also say it's good but of course one must like the style )

The value of the food at the Christmas markets gets worse every year. As a particularly bad example, the other day I saw a stall at Bellevue selling 4 small dim sum chinese dumplings for 14chf... wtf.
EDIT - It was this place, Madame Sum https://www.madamesum.com/
However, there was a Japanese dumpling place near Opera House selling 6x Gyoza for 10chf which was the only semi-reasonably priced place I saw all evening.
As much a I love Zurich the Christmas markets here are just awful... too small and overcrowded with overpriced food and huge queues for gluhwein stalls in peak hours. I rarely go.

I like the Afghani Manti on Belvue.
That said, the portion is a bit like an appetizer.
There's no problem spending 50 CHF if you're hungry.

Yes its a typical f...ing overpriced Zurich happening.
But I read that they charge 10,000 CHF for a months rent on each selling stand. The spirit of Christmas!! Its anyhow a shit boring thing in Bellevue. No atmosphere.

We'll be frequenting Oh My Greek at HB as per usual. Last time, it was CHF12 for an gyro.
