Re: Cinema

It can be any cinema, even very small ones have English original films.

You need to read the local newspapers, the adverts for cinemas have the name of the film, the days it is showing, and then E/d/f which means English sound track, with German and French subtitles. If the codes are D/e/f then there will only be German sound, with English and French sub titles.

Re: Cinema

All the cinemas I've been to here use 'vo' to signify that it's the original version, followed by letters to indicate the subtitle language.

For example I had 'vof' for hacksaw ridge that I saw tonight. It was the original film with French subtitles.

Re: Cinema

You can search for all the English versions of movies so www.cineman.ch

You can search by movie or cinema and filter by language, so it's pretty easy to find something to watch.

Re: Cinema

I also recommend any cinemas that accept the Carte Bleu, 13fr for a regular viewing is more or less reasonable.

Smaller "art films" etc might not be shown, but the standard releases usually are. The live broadcasts from ROH also included

Also the Arena card which has the same function for Arena cinemas.

However, and this is through experience here, sometimes you'll just get VO....and then you think "great! in English and no subtitles" but that isn't the case, for example with rogue one in Lausanne and Geneva 2 places had VO listed and then it turned out to be in English with French and German subtitles, even when they both had another viewing of Rogue One on the same day Close to the same time with Edf listed....

My experience with VO (English speaking films) in the Swiss French area is they ALWAYS have subtitles in DE and FR. They are distributed to the cinemas like that. Does not matter if the VF version is playing at the same time or not.

Re: Cinema

In Bern I went to see an Iranian film entitled "The Salesman", OV/d/f and it was in Farsi.

Not to be disappointed, we went to see "Lion" (India & Australia), but the first part was all in Hindi & Bengali, and with the English sub titles missing in places...

Hint: if you can't read German or French, call the cinema and find out which language is on the sound track.

Capital theatre in Nyon has English films on Mondays. The Aubonne theatre also has films in English.

I think that it is safe to say that you're never going to see an English language film in a Swiss cinema without subtitles.

Re: Cinema

I saw "The Salesman" and yes it was a good film. My complaint, or better, my warning, was that with an English title,
and listed with Ov/d/f , I had rather expected an English sound track.

I don't mind reading the sub-titles, they are useful when the sound track is difficult to hear, a scene in a bar for example.
But I go to the cinema to relax, not to improve my French.

I agree, English sound track will always have sub titles.

Re: Cinema

Personally i prefer Abaton and Arena Sihlcity because we go very rarely. But if we do we book the lounge stuff (quite expensive 40 - 50 bucks per person), so far we liked the Sihlcity one the most.

I saw a trailer of that, seems like a good old British piss-take.
