Minimun age for entry to the cinema

I have two kids, 4years and 3 years old.

I wonder if I am eligible to go to see a movie with my kids.

If so, do they have to pay? How much is the tariff?

Thank you
Best regards

Re: Minimun age for entry to the cinema

Best is to look at the website of the cinema you want to visit, they will have info about minimum legal age for every movie.

Kitag and Arena have a minimum age of 4 (which is also the lowest classification of at least the kanton of Zürich.)

And yes, you would have to pay for every chair used.

Re: Minimun age for entry to the cinema

As a rule it's 6 years old and they normally check, but from when my son was about 5 and a half we taught him to blag the guy at the entrance that he was 6.

Then in the next breath teaching him that lying is actually wrong...

Re: Minimun age for entry to the cinema

The rule in Zürich is 4 (category SB), and kids of age 4 and 5 always need to have an adult along.

However large majority of the cartoons is classified for a minimum age of 6

i think it is not good to put your kids for more than an hour watching fast moving cartoon with colours and high sounds. take them to an open area, it is much better.

There should no longer be any differences between cinemas nor cantons regarding minimum entry age.

The German classification system is now used. But in cinemas it is possible that children up to two years younger than the age restriction are allowed to enter, if accompanied by an adult.

The German system also now applied to DVDs.

The Swiss only classify films that the Germans have not classified or where the Swiss commission disagrees with the German classification age.

Re: Minimun age for entry to the cinema

It seems that the Swiss have not heard that there is a minimum age for kids at a movie theatre.

It probably depends on the kid and the movie - as long as they are not annoying other patrons.

But as with many things in Switzerland, any age restriction that does apply, is different in different Kantons -

LOL, well up to 12 months is a breed apart, we soon have to stop having the boy in between us when watching things like Game of Thrones due to him starting to understand what actually is going on. And as for the 3yr old from TS, i've not yet come across a cinema that allows 3 year olds.

No, this has changed! There should no longer be any differences between cinemas nor cantons regarding minimum entry age. http://merlin.obs.coe.int/iris/2012/1/article16.en.html

Based on your professional medical opinion? At least provide some evidence to back up your statements.

Noise can of course be harmful to young ears if it is too high, but otherwise an occasional 1.5 hours of watching "fast moving colours" in a cinema is not going to make your children go blind.

That dates back to 2011 and as far as I can tell has certainly not been implemented yet as there are are still differences between the different cantons.

In a study a lab rat was left sat in front of a cinema screen for one week non-stop and it died. Of starvation.

No idea if it has actually been implemented. I did find a few things supporting the fact that it was the plan. Also that documents reads as if it has been:

"The minimum age for admission to public showings of films is from now on the same throughout Switzerland."

Spot the inherent contradiction. Do note that in every country, foreign regulations have at best anecdotal value.

The commission operates on a national Level but the implementation happens by Kanton. Zürich has joined recently so all Kantons now take part, perhaps with the exception of Ticino. However, since it requires kantonal law to implement, not sure if all have amended their laws already. With that said, if all individual cinemas and chains follow the commission's recommendations the effect is the same.

Ticino often (not always) imports the dubbed Italian version of the film, rather than the German version, so some differences perhaps will continue there.

And the French speaking Romandie cantons generally have the French versions since the German ones are useless here.

Re: Minimun age for entry to the cinema

Some cinemas will control kids for their ages, some will not. You won't know for sure until you try to enter. It is really hit or miss. In addition, some ticket takers will ask the parents if the kids are old enough and some will actually check. There is no hard and fast rule about the enforcement.

It is rather clever of you to have done so, as the irony seems to have been lost on many.

The link to the Cineman site, waaaaaaaaaaaay above, also showed that the literary classic Despicable Me 3 had the age restrictions set at 4 years in St Gallen, 6 years in Bern and 8 years in Dietlikon.

Foreign regulations, unless it comes to tax schemes that is.. but thats another story.

PS: if you can't trust the accuracy of the internet, what can you trust
