Re: Which restaurant(s) would you recommend in the Basel area?

Hi
It really depends what sort of food you are looking for. We have only been here since last July so don't know too much. We like Indian food so have enjoyed Jay's and Indian palace, Mandir in Basel. Mandir has a partner restaurant in Lorrach, also good. A picturesque restaurant is Piccobello which is beside the Trois Rois hotel in Schifflande. Has a pizzeria and a fancier Italien restaurant above it. Great views of the Rhine.

I would also love to hear of restaurants other people have enjoyed - with international/Italian food..

One of my all-time favorites is Lily's. For international/Italian food I would recommend Bodega Zum Strauss or Oliv. There's another nice restaurants I cam across, but as Lorraine, it depends a lot on what type of restaurant you're looking for.

my idea was to write down our favourite restaurants or restaurants that we had some good food around basel.
i generally like mexican food but since i left San Diego i never found a good mexican restaurant. Italian is also good. Picobello is good and is another one near volta platz very good but i always forget the name

Re: Which restaurant(s) would you recommend in the Basel area?

Sometime you can find some good restaurants here. http://www.guide-bleu.ch/
My local favorite is Bad Stübli in Schinznach Bad - but I am a little biased (I know the Chef).
The Rösti farm in Bozenegg is also nice.
OK - this is not Basel - maybe 40 minutes away.
In Basel for lunch, I sometimes go to a small restaurant about 200M from Dreispitz (Tram 11) - lovely soup and the main course is normally very edible.
Also next to the tram stop is a restaurant where they train young kids - http://www.jobfactory.ch/
This is not expensive and very nice. Also makes you feel good to give the kids a chance.

Im from San Diego too and really miss the mexican food but I found this place near the Marketplatz called "La Fonda" has some good (at least for Basel) mexican food a bit pricey tho. Good free chips, salsa and guacamole.

I would suggest picking up a copy of " Basel geht aus" ( available in bookstores and kiosks). They cover the whole region and I've found their critique to be pretty spot on with most restaurants.

Re: Which restaurant(s) would you recommend in the Basel area?

Well, if you'll support a bit of self promotion for a moment, I have to recommend the restaurant my husband (Italian-Swiss chef) and I (artist from Chicago) just opened in Aesch called Restaurant Schlössli, www.schlossli.ch. The menu is small, a bit Italian, a bit Swiss, a bit French, but always seasonal and fresh. There's also a la carte brunch with eggs, bacon and sausages made to order on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm.

It's a cozy location with indoor and outdoor seating and a great view. You take the number 11 tram all the way to the end of the line in Aesch and the restaurant is just across the street. There are also great hikes that start in Aesch so if you want to combine some outdoor activity with a nice meal, this is the place to come.

The restaurant is open for lunch, dinner or just coffee or drinks from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 10 pm.
Have a look at the website and current menus (in English), www.schlossli.ch, and hope to see you sometime soon!
