Re: Favourite Basel Bars

Hi everyone,

I need a alternate location for City Beach in case it rains...any suggestions?

Preferrably something not too far away from the Messeplatz area. We've already been to Bar Rouge recently so I'd prefer something different if it exists...

It needs to be big enough for a group of 20+ people since we usually have a group around that size. I personally would appreciate it if there was food available seeing as I usually don't have time to eat beforehand.

Last Friday at Pickwicks over the Ascension holiday weekend went well. Basel is decidedly less crowded during long weekends, but we had a good group and good weather...

We sat outside most of the time and went in later to watch the karaoke. It definitely deserves a repeat!

I posted a pic on our facebook page here...

And anyone who wants to join us sometime, just sign yourself up for the weekly email announcement here!

Looking forward to seeing you at TGIF!

Re: Favourite Basel Bars

TGIF went to City Beach last Friday and I have to say it was very nice... I was most surprised that they had some very nice food choices (for a bar on top of a parking garage) all for under 14 chf.

Drink prices were typical. Not too high and definitely not too low!

Lots of places to sit, but if you have a big group, you might want to call ahead and reserve something if you are coming around 6-7pm.

Lots of lounge chairs if you want to kick back and relax. Just don't go if the weather looks bad because there is very little shelter against wind, cold or rain.

We were there with cloudy and possibly rainy weather. No rain but the cold and wind did eventually (after a few hours) convince us to go elsewhere.

Re: Favourite Basel Bars

So where do I take my visitor this afternoon when she arrives from the UK to sit outside in the sunshine with a glass of rose? The summer places (Chill am Rhy, Citybeach, Hinterhof's Dachterrasse) aren't open yet, and there are a few places with seats outside but in the shade. I didn't particularly want to hit Steinenvorstadt, and will be going to Kaserne/Parterre at some point, but where else?

All along the river on the Kleinbasel side of the bridge would be nice. There's the Kraft Hotel and others alongside it.

Thanks Suzy, I forgot about those - duh! The Hecht is the one closest to the bridge isn't it? With the grumpiest staff ever as I recall...

Ta JustRose - I like Cargo, thought it might be on the wrong side of the river for the sun, but worth a try

Re: Favourite Basel Bars

Update - Cargo was closed at 3.30pm, but although I thought all the buvettes had been closed down, the one in front of Kaserne was open - perfect.

Re: Favourite Basel Bars

Hope you got to enjoy some sun! Have not been to the spot in front of Kaserne but may give it a go one of these days when the weather is noce. There is also a dock with a restaurant/bar on the river past the westeinbrucke, no idea the name but for 5chf (and a few drinks) you can sit out all day and enjoy the sun!

Re: Favourite Basel Bars

We did, it was great thanks . So great I was there again yesterday evening! And I hear the other buvette up by Dreirosenbruecke is planning to open this summer, though not yet.

I know that other place you mean, it's the Rhy-something-something - the bathing station on the river?

You might mean the bar/ cafe beneath the Tinguely museum. It is quite nice and you can have a beer outside on the terrace in the sun.
