For my part, I am more and more looking for non-smoking restaurants. Any good tips anyone?? We currently avoid eating out as a family as the kids can't wait to be out of the smoking environment, which has a tendency to create some tension in what is meant to be a pleasant experience! When available the non-smoking section still tends to be located in the most unattractive part of the restaurant.
The Bauernhof has a two non-smoking sections and they are both very nice rooms. San Marco in Zug is now totally smoke free.

There is one in the square behind Credit Suisse called Giadinos and another in Metalli next to the water beside UBS.

Giadinos does a great lunch menu. Sometimes CHF 24 for a mixed grill menu

Fish is a rip off at liguria. They are really taking the p*iss when it comes to CHF 80 per person just for the fish.

We tried this Italian behind Credit Suisse, and the prices were reasonable. The
food was excellent. I had eggplant ravioli which was one of the best Italian
meals I've had in a while.

Really? I've never had a bad meal from there, stands alongside some of the best I had back in England. Mind you I always take away because the interior decor puts me off staying.
I didn't like it, and I have been there twice. Perhaps I didn't order the right dish, or
I was there on an "off" night.

Horses for courses I guess

Cheers for the tips on Giardino folks, walked past the other day on the way down to the Mexican place Juanitos (also very good & pretty reasonable prices too) and wondered if it was any good - next time fo sho!

I am not a fan of Juanitos. It is all food that you can cook at home. Plus I feel like I am being squashed in there because the tables are so close together. It is nice for drinks outside in the summer, but pay as you go because they have got the drink orders mixed up a couple of times on us. There is nothing worse than stopping for a quick drink and getting a billed for another 6 margaritas that you didn't enjoy!

Re: Good Restaurants near Baar/Zug/Cham

thanks for the great tips.... i have 2 kids myself so it's good to know where to go if they tag along. One good place is the Restaurant Vordergeissboden on zugerberg. It's good and relaxed, you can go for an early meal with the kids.

Re: Good Restaurants near Baar/Zug/Cham

we went to Hinterburgmuehle Restaurant on saturday .... food was good but the service sucked, the girl was so unmotivated and kept serving us more wine so we'd have to take another ... we'll go back though cause it's a cosy good restaurant (smoke free too)

The Roethelberg in Zug is very nice (esp. in the summer)

The Gulm in AEgeri is well worth a visit.

Re: Good Restaurants near Baar/Zug/Cham

I just wanted to give the Restaurant Krone in Sihlbrugg another recommendation, we have eaten there many times, with and without children, even had our Christmas Day lunch there, absolutely beautiful. Also have stayed overnight in their hotel and put the overflow of visitors there when we run out of room.
I am beginning to adjust to the expense of Switzerland and the value you should be getting for your CHF, please don't try the Mongolian BBQ restaurant in Zug, horrible decor, ordinary food, ridiculously priced.

Re: Good Restaurants near Baar/Zug/Cham

Brandenburg across from Herti is by far a favourite of mine. Can get a bit loud at lunchtimes, but I've only ever had great meals there and quick service.

Bären by Metalli is great for cordon bleu and hot stone (steak).

For lunches, I also like Monsieur Baguette (corner of Gubelstrasse and Baarerstrasse). They have really good flamkuchen. Speck (by the train station) is run by the same folks and they always have something new and tasty on the weekly menus (there's proper restaurant seating upstairs).

If you like your Rösti a crispy but still a little greasy and served out of a cast iron frying pan, than Widder (in the old town) is the place to go.

In Baar Neufeld, there is a really good Italian restaurant called La Strada. They have a tasty antipasti buffet.

Gulm you're just paying for the view. The chef from Gulm has a small restaurant in Oberageri next to Coop- basically the same menu as Gulm but less expense

If you like Italian food, Restaurant Bacco in Arth is good and inexpensive. For traditional Swiss food, Restaurant Gotthard in Goldau is great. Try their cordon-bleu it's delicious.

Bären by Metalli has really good food. If you're really hungry than the Baar brewery has nice big meals at a reasonable price.

I second the vote for Speck near the Zug train/bus station. Their daily specials are decent and oftentimes a delight.

I can say that the Tandoor Indian restaurant in the middle of
Baar is cr@p.
I second that. Anyone can make better indian food than what they serve, just by watching youtube videos online.

Re: Good Restaurants near Baar/Zug/Cham

Restaurant Fontana in Baar is excellent and very good value for money ! So good in fact that I eat there whenever I can.

The Restaurant is located in the same office building as Glencore. It is their 'canteen' and also open to the public. But 'canteen' is perhaps the wrong word for a Guide Bleu listed restaurant. Reservations are required.

Café Spatz in Baar is now a Thai restaurant. The food is very good
and not too expensive. The down side is that it takes a while to
get the food.

hello..

The following are in Zug and really very good..
Liguria
Aklin am Zytturm
The Liguria

We celebrated a friends b'day a couple of weeks ago. 16 of us. We had the worst service I have ever received in a restaurtant. The food came staggered over 30 mins, & after 2 hours of ordering . The b'day girl got her food last because they forgot her shrimps. and on top of it, they brought her raw piece of lamb, knowing she was pregnant.

Just bad and really embarrassing.
