If a link is posted in a Subway thread, it is going to be related to Subway in continental Europe. In this instance Subway in Germany. It discusses Subway's plan to expand drastically in Germany
Anything about Switzerland in that article?

I can't believe this thread is still going.

Re: Subway Sandwiches

Great news,

There is a Subway under construction in Zurich! Not sure of the street name but it's across the street from the famous Sotheby's Art store. There is a sign in the window that says they will be open soon.

No, but I would predict that the same conditions will / would exist between Subway's HQ in Connecticut and the franchisees in Switzerland, which is why I posted the article. As there are no Subways currently being operated in Switzerland, this might help explain why, and why the stores currently under construction could have problems.

Also, if you look at the number of stores they want to open within the next 4-5 years in Germany (over 1,000), it seems very probable that they might want to expand drastically in Switzerland as well. They want to overtake McDonald's in our neighbor to the north!

Re: Subway Sandwiches

From their site:

26.4.2007

Looks like things will be a bit delayed, but oh well. If I waited this long, whats another month or so. Looks like I am one of a few expats that are looking forward to having another "option".

Thomps, I think the Hooters in Zurich is supposed to open near Helvetiaplatz, but opening has been delayed because of trouble with the building permits.

Anyone that writes this on their website already has my respect (my bold)...

"But whoever is willing to take the time to look at the Hooters phenomenon and its underlying values will realize that there is far more behind it than yet another americanized restaurant chain that is aiming at the downfall of moral values. "

Re: Subway Sandwiches

In America, Hooters fills a niche by appealing to men to cowardly to go to an actual strip club, so they use the "good buffalo wings" as an excuse to go ogle and grope miserable yet scantily-clad teenage girls.

It sure would be nice if people just adapted to a new culture instead of trying to re-create everything from wherever they moved from. I'm sure I don't just speak for myself when I say that I moved from America to get away from these endless generic and uninspired chain restaurants. Does anyone really need to be able to order the exact same shitty sandwich in Los Angeles and London and Dubai? Try something new, it won't kill you.

Two observations about this:
1. Hooters in Switzerland must be targetted at tourists. The locals are certainly used to it - every beach and spa and wellness resort is pretty much clothing optional.
2. re the sameness - I agree, and I guess it's just a consistency and comfort thing. Sort-of unrelated note... Aborigines in Australia. Tourists go to Australia and when they see Aborigines, expect that they all play the digeridoo. Trouble is, only one small tribe way up in Arnhem land actually plays the digeridoo in real life, as part of their tribal culture. But tourists think: ahh, Aborigine = digeridoo. It's so photogenic that all tourist-facing groups have learned to do it. The point I'm making: not all places/tribes/etc are the same, and people should learn to appreciate the differences. It might be tricky if someone is visiting a country for eg two weeks.

Re: Subway Sandwiches

Bubbles, you really need to learn about men: despite the 'clothing-optional' elements all around on public display, we really can't get enough of scantily-clad pretty girls serving us buffalo wings and pitchers of beer.

Sad, but true

I'm a european, I've never had the pleasure of visiting such an establishment. When I do, I will no doubt condemn it as too many people having a good time and being a prime example of <<insert bad PC stuff here>>, it therefore must close immediately.

I would wait to form an opinion until you've actually been there. Be sure to make a witty breast and/or thigh joke at the genuinely amused waitress while winking slyly at the rest of the people having a good time. You'd probably love it, as will the waitress no doubt! It fills the cultural void between Pro-wrestling and Nascar perfectly.

People define fun as different things, some people like to try and experience new things, while others have a blast by insulating themselves in a safe and comfortable bubble of familiarity. To each his own.
