Review: Tibits Zürich

Restaurant: Tibits Zürich
Type: Vegetarian 'Mid-Class' Buffet
Date Visited: 7pm, Tuesday Februrary 9th, 2010
Rating: 2.75/5.0

The missus, a friend, and I visited Tidbits last evening to have a decent vegetarian meal (before going out for drinks) at a place that was oft recommended to us. This place markets itself as a trendy buffet, with innovative vegetarian fusion cuisine. You pay for anything you eat by weight, and it's pretty much self service.

What's generally on offer (keep in mind everything is vegetarian):

Italian Antipasti Style Dishes
(Sundried tomatoes, pickled mushrooms, tofu-pasta salad, marinated artichokes, etc...)

Franco-Germanic Cuisine
(Bread Varieties, Potato wedges, Au Gratin, baked potatoes, fried corn medallions, etc...)

Indo-Chinese Dishes
(ChopSuey Veggies, Curry Tofu and Veggies, Garbanzo Bean Curry, fried lentil medallions, etc...)

Thoughts:
1/ First off, I got a belly-ache after eating a moderate portion, I often will eat anything, and can in decent quantities, so that was a bit of a let down for me.

2/ Everything tasted "okay", having eaten a lot of what was on offer in authentic, ethnic restaurants, I felt like I wasn't getting my penny's worth. Usually these dishes are available at more reasonable prices, and of better quality, elsewhere.

3/ Dishes clashed with each other heavily in taste, au gratin did not go down well with the Chopsuey Veggies, neither did the hummus following the Curried Garbanzo beans. There's an insufficient selection of food from one particular cuisine and you're often forced to mix food stuffs if you want a filling meal.

4/ The selection of drinks is moderate, though a little limited if you're a person that fancies wine with your meal. Don't expect anything fancy, and it's only 3 bottles of red and 3 of white mid-grade wines.

5/ The deserts also try to do too much, we had a cinnamon-mandarin- tiramisu, a slice of cheesecake, and some fruits. I've had better tasting desserts from the baking section at Migros.

Price of the Meal (for 2 persons, all approximate)
Main Meal 50 CHFs
Dessert 15 CHFs
Wine 40 CHFs

Ambience:
There isn't any, they don't take reservations, so the entrance was lined with 15 people at one point, all waiting for a table. There's no service, which is understandable in a buffet-type restaurant, but they are prompt with clearing empty plates. The tables are jammed close together, so it's hard to get to the food and back if you're in a corner.

Concluding remarks:
The concept is interesting, and for people not accustomed to eating vegetarian food it's a good introduction. I could not enjoy it however, having had better food at mid-range (quality and ambience) Sri-lankan, Thai, Afghani, and Italian restaurants in Canton Thurgau.

It's not terribly cheap nor is it expensive, but I'd advise one to look for alternative options if you're serious about trying vegetarian or ethnic cuisine. Perhaps my expectations were high, but the food honestly did not complement each other, and that to me is a significant shortcoming of this restaurant.

Thanks, I did mean 'Tibits', as mentioned in my introductions and a later post I blame all typos on my QWERTZ keyboard.

Actually, 'Tibits' was what I thought it was called, but I thought that Tidbits made more sense. Should have googled it.

I am looking forward to visiting Hiltl in a week or so.

I like the Tibits in Basel, the food is nice and they make very nice samosas hmmmmmmmm, I do not like meat that much so so for me it was good. The only thing I did not like was the iced tea they sell on the bottles,...BUT the hot chocolates is great!!!!

Let us know what you think about Hiltl, i'm sure you will prefer it over Tibits, it is much bigger, they take reservations and they have a bigger selection of food!

I also prefer HILTL - not the sit down and order section, but the buffet section. The ambiance is quite nice there and the food is pricey but yummy.

Thank you for the review. I wanted to try it but after looking at the website I was a bit hesitant. I will completely refrain from it. The price/value doesn't cut it for me.

Bloody Hell, they have samoosas?

If I'd seen the little buggers I would have gone mental on them. Cleared the place out.

I'm going to go sulk in the corner for a little bit now

It's also one of the most popular pickpocket locations in the country.

The London branch closed pretty quickly, surprise surprise. Do they still have a branch at the Rohstofflager? That was cool. Guess it's gone, too. Onion rings at 3am...

Re: Review: Tibits Zürich

Tibits is ok, I like Hiltl more and I'm also a big fan of meat, but I can't understand complaining about the foods clashing when you're eating at a buffet style restaurant billing itself as having a selection of foods from around the world.

I think your expectations may have been a little high, I always got the impression that it was sort of a healthy fast food lunchtime alternative to Mc/Bk/Kebap crap, and with those expectations, I wasn't disappointed. I think Hiltl is a far better choice for a nice dinner.

Wow, I am surprised that it closed down so quickly. I was just wondering to myself why this concept of delicious vegetarian food has yet to expand outside of Switzerland.

Well I was actually surprised to find such a place in Switzerland - the land where people think vegetarians just eat chicken or fish... When I used to live in the US there were some very delectable vegetarian restaurants I still miss.

HILTL is great though and the average customer better looking than those veggies I remember in the states

Love the cinnamon harissa and their cucumber algea salad...

I also LOVE Tidbits in Basel! I just went last week for dinner (this was my 3rd time for dinner). Everytime I have gone, the food & the choice has been tasty!

No complaints (and I ain't no vegetarian!)

I find the a la carte terribly disappointing, but the buffet really good. I would agree with the person who said they had eaten better veggie meals elsewhere though.

I consider 'Tibits' expensive – it's vegetarian (i.e. no expensive ingredients), it's self-service and it's not atmospheric at all.

Re: Review: Tibits Zürich

My mistake, I think Tibits had an in-club branch at the late Toni Molkerei. But it's gone now. You could dance your heart out then adjourn for vegi delights at three in the morning. Most civilised.
