Commenters blame deteriorating quality towards the end.
I have never been there myself but from what I had heard from friends it's never been that great in the first place.

Re: Goodman Steakhouse coming to Zürich

We went twice a few years ago. First time was ok, second time was meh. The Bärengasse is better, but better still, just buy the steak and grill it at home.

Perhaps with the high prices and its unexplained overnight disappearance it should have been called 'Goodfellas'.

A Côte-de-boeuf done on the charcoal grill..
Unless you live in a house with a garden, it is highly unlikely that you will be allowed to use a charcoal grill. I can make a good steak on a gas grill, but I can't match the flavor of one done on proper charcoal.

At the same time, come now people, eating out is a vanity thing, there doesn't have to be a "point". There is a certain magic to meeting up with good friends in a nice restaurant and enjoying the food without having to spend time before and after to set everything up and then clean all the dishes.

Why ride a motorbike? For all intents and purposes a car is more comfortable and safe. Why go hiking? I can just watch pretty pictures on the internet. Etc...

I live in an apartment (albeit top floor), I have had gas and charcoal grills for 25 years, one of which is a smoker (12 years). Never have had a complaint.

Sure, just not for things that I can do better myself.

I wish I could be more like Tom. Perhaps Tom could write a book on "How to be great - the Tom way"

Actually - I'd rather spend 100chf on meat and wine (for 2) at home than go out - chances are the meat and wine will be much better - and I don't have to enjoy it near other people.

I have this feeling where if Tom came upon a person who was on fire, instead of putting the fire out, he'd just tell them something like: "Dude, just don't be on fire. It's simple. Look at me, I'm not on fire and it takes no effort at all!"

Similar here. Top floor apartment with charcoal grill on the balcony. Not a single complaint in 15 years.

No, Tom would just set himself on fire, but with a bigger flame. Then he would put it out and walk away unscathed. Then come on EF and tell everyone about it.

Re: Goodman Steakhouse coming to Zürich

We're not on the top floor - but I have picnic grill that gets going fairly quickly so not too much smoke. Plus I check if the folks upstairs are out before lighting it. I have a gas grill as a fallback.

Living near the German border I find a couple of over the border acquired fillet steaks and two bottles of 5 year old aged in oak barrels Rioja Reserva for around 20 Chf in total is adequate for me; at least my steak is properly bloody which most German and Swiss restaurants fail to do - muttering dumb excuses like regulations about the temperature cooked beef should reach

Re: Goodman Steakhouse coming to Zürich

well, well, well, if you follow the local media - you need some German for that of course - they have closed down in the meantime.
Seems, if you go to their website, they are still running.
Well, guess that's the duffrence between cyberspace and meatspace, I guess.

No problem. The cooks who failed are just plain full of sh*t.

This begs the question - what would happen if Chuck Norris invited himself to Tom's for a bbq?

On topic - Goodmans did the best burgers in Zurich. It was a shame they took them off the business lunch special. Their steak was also excellent - better than I can do on a charcoal grill (restaurant lump wood, cast iron griddle, before you ask). I also didn't think it was too badly priced, given the size of the steaks. For me the wine was the biggest issue - too high mark ups and not much choice under a 100 a bottle.

Probably a couple of years since I've been, but it was always busy.

Re: Goodman Steakhouse coming to Zürich

Maybe the restaurant-guys can correct me, but AFAIK drinks always bring the most profit.
Time to prepare is almost zero, no additional ingredients needed...
And with the prices of the food, most people were probably in the right mood to really splash out some money for the wine, too.

They do make the higher end of the percentage of overall profit.
At the same time, they make up the highest end of losses as employees tend to drink at the end of shifts or take it home with them considerably. Also it is an easy way for a server to bump up their cash in pocket,(stealing). Alcohol is not as easy as an avenue to profit as one might think.
