Best place to eat in/around the train station? (anywhere in Switzerland)

So, you find yourself passing through Basel, Bern, Olten, Neuchatel, Aarau... and you're hungry but don't fancy SBB dining-car fare. You decide to jump off the train, grab lunch and catch the next one.

Where is the best place to grab said lunch? Say either inside the station or within 7 minutes' walk... bonus points for walking directions.

(inspired by an accidental jaunt to Basel yesterday )

I'll start things off:

Zürich HB, in the station: Brasserie Federal (plain, filling Swiss food)
Zürich HB, near the station: head east, across the Limmat, and take a right into the Niederdorf. Chopsticks (Chinese/Malaysian), the Johanniter (Swiss food, better than the Federal)... or keep walking, but that's about it within 7 minutes of HB.

Zürich Stadelhofen: Mishio in the station (generic 'Asian'), Restaurant Stadelhofen across the street (standard Swiss food), Globus Bellevue (four minutes' walk.)

Interlaken Ost: good Punjabi restaurant in the Hotel Carlton (turn right, walk about 150m and it's across the street.) I think the restaurant is called Shangrila but not too certain.

Re: Best place to eat in/around the train station? (anywhere in Switzerland)

How long is "grab something to eat" allowed to take?

Zürich HB:
Beyond - at least one of the most original Chinese restaurants in Zurich - is in Zollstrasse 20. Thats around 3 minutes walking max, if you look from Bahnhofstrasse it is "behind" the station on the left on the street that is next to the train tracks.

Yumi-Hana - best and only Korean snack bar in the city - Schützengasse 7. I'd say also around three minutes max. If you come from HB, it is in a sidestreet of Bahnhofstrasse on the left. Great food and quick if you do manage to get a seat which is not that easy during the typical times.

For Basel, if you are after takeaway, then you can't beat Blueberry the American bakery. They sell the nicest bagels:

http://www.blueberry-bakery.ch/d/blu.../seite585.html

They are located upstairs in the SBB where all of the main shops are at the end nearest to the main exit to the city.

Well, most of the trains run on an hourly schedule... so say max 50-55 minutes including the walk there/back?

Re: Best place to eat in/around the train station? (anywhere in Switzerland)

I'm not into 'best places' but I had a good meal at the Train Bleu just opposite the Basel SBB - the Swiss station - in Basel a while back.
For me, one of the most important things, besides the food being good and the service friendly, was that they obviously realised that folk wanted to catch a train afterwards. None of the 'twenty-minute wait for the menu; fifteen minute wait to be able to pay' which sometimes has me chewing my fingernails.
The Homepage says 'upscale' for the price and I cannot remember what it cost, but I didn't walk out again when I saw the menu, so it couldn't have been that bad.

Re: Best place to eat in/around the train station? (anywhere in Switzerland)

in fairness to Geneva this is a nice little "fast food" lunch spot

http://maps.google.ch/maps?oe=utf-8&...52.09,,1,13.34

primarily they do sandwichs but they are all made to order and it's very "soup nazi'ish" ( if anyone knows that reference ) you walk in and join the back of the queue ( there is always a queue !) then you tell the shop owner ( he is always there ) what bread you want and if you want olive oil or butter, then quickly onto the meats and cheese ( quickly now !! ) as soon as he's cut your choice he hands the now half made sandwich off to one of his assistants and you shuffle down the line to tell them what sort of veggies condiments you would like.

Re: Best place to eat in/around the train station? (anywhere in Switzerland)

In Bern, get on the tunnel right off the tracks. There are lots of pretty decent sandwich, juice and croissant shops there, so you don't have to walk too far off the platform and if there isn't a line you can pop in and out in less than 5 minutes.

If you walk further down the councourse to the main gallery (where the big train signs are), you can get to a small food court that sells chinese, Swiss Grill, and McDonald's, if you like that sort of thing.

Walk, more towards the exit, in a Southwards direction, and you'll find a Migros and several sweet and chocolate shops.

My favorites are the pretzel sandwiches at the sandwich shops just off the tracks...

Re: Best place to eat in/around the train station? (anywhere in Switzerland)

But for a really good meal IFF you have 30 mins to an hour to spare in Bern...

Walk out of the train station towards Bahnhofplatz, make a right where all the trams stop and walk along the main street for about 20 meters. On your left there will be a sign marked "Markthalle" which contains lots of little restaurants one next to the other, including Japanese, Turkish, several bars, and my favorite, Wok Town, a Korean restaurant.

Order Bul-Go-Gi and a Calanda. That's the best lunch meal ever, reasonable price, fast service, and the wait-staff is super friendly.

Chopsticks (Chinese/Malaysian),
replace Chopsticks with Lee's and save yourself 10chfs for exactly the same food.

It's 8 minutes walk, but you'll be all done within 25 minutes. Also you can take tram 4 to Rudolf Brun Brucke in 2 minutes.

Also here Tasca Romero is an old fashioned tapas bar frequently primarily by old, fat Spanish men. Tapas is perfect for train stopovers because you can pay upfront and not wait for the bill.

I second Chinese food at "Beyond"... no frills but authentic, and extremely close to Zürich HB.

mamazurich - if you want to have quotes looking like quotes, you have to leave the bits in square brackets in place both at the beginning and end! Chopping bits out between them works OK.

Back on topic...

Sorry, disagree with this. I bought a blueberry bagel from exactly this place and after many tries in Europe, am yet again, very disappointed. Unless Jewish, one cannot make bagels. They have the art and it seems to be hard to copy. Those things are just expensive and nought else

On the north side of Zürich HB (use the Sihlquai exit) there's a little Thai grocer that also serves hot food. It's reasonably priced and pretty good, but only serves lunch I think.

Thai Shop Villa Chiengmai

As long as we are talking Thai.. there is one place in Versoix ( just outside GE ) I've always been curious about

I was just going to post the same THai place on Josefstrasse ( it's on the corner and faces you as you approach from HB) as Gastro Gnome suggests - I found it also from someone's recommendation.
You can eat on one of their few tables, or take it out in a plastic box with cutlery etc. I have been known when changing trains in HB at lunch time to dash out, grab one and dash back to catch the train to eat it on my journey.

Bern, on the left (East) of the main station entrance /exit, you will find Tibbits, an excellent vegitarian restaurant. It is self service so you can get your food quickly. You pay by the weight of your plate, at the wine / coffee bar. In the summer you can sit outside. http://www.tibits.ch/d/restaurants-take-away/bern/ (4 photos)

In Bern, Tibits (Hiltl) or Jack's Brasserie, belonging to the Schweizerhof Hotel.
Bit more expensive, but worth it!!!
