Re: Eat well, eat cheap...

Last night me and my daughter went to Restaurant Peking Garden in Glattbrugg. Good food, good prices (1 soup, 1 appetizer, 2 meals plus drinks 43.-chf.) and I had the pleasure of hearing more patrons speaking British English (obviously good atmosphere) than Swiss German..!

(an EF hangout..?)

On a similar topic:

I find Globus foodhall in Bellvue to be good value for lunch. Costs me 22chf with a drink for hot and tasty Asian food. Much better IMO than Mishio or similar, and whatever I get from Migros for lunch is nasty and seems to cost exactly 14chf every time. Lunch at Totos or similar is always 35-40chf which is crazy for lunch on a semi-daily basis.
You do realise you could hop on the 8 and get a two course lunch including the burger at Goodmans for the CHF 40 you pay at Totos? I will have to check out Globus though, as I'm quite a fan of the Mishio beef chow mein.

I find Globus food '0815'. If you're in the Seefeld area, Tiffins can't be touched for the price, if you can get a seat.

What's 0815? There are only a couple of things I like at Tiffins but mainly it's very loud and I rarely get a seat and have you noticed you have to be an athlete to get into the seats when people are on either side? Well maybe not you, but me anyway.

Run of the mill, i.e. boring

Here's what leo says. (didn't know it meant "cookie cutter" too, though)

But isn't that because we're talking about Asian food in Switzerland? I mean Tiffins isn't exactly the pinnacle of authenticity is it?

My Learned Companion and I may have stumbled on a cunning way to eat nice food for bargain prices...

I had a very pleasant roesti with onions, cheese and bacon, followed by a creme brulee with tonka beans in it (apparently). MN had venison schnitzel with all the trimmings and some kind of soup with bits in it.
This description I love! So much more enjoyable to read than some poncy critic. More DB restaurant reviews please.

Re: Eat well, eat cheap...

My favorite restaurant in Lausanne has a fancy side and a bistro side. Both are delicious!! The restaurant side we went a few times for special occasions. But the bistro side we used to go quite often.

It's called La Pomme de Pin. Yum!

As much as I luv ya, DB, I am very surprised at the invert snobbery you displayed in your initial post.
I like nice restaurants with more than a plain wooden table and I am not a useless w@nka
(as far as I know)
I am also not quite a Gastro Gnome, either, but I do love a bit of ambiance and am willing to pay for it.
For me, it's like enjoying a good holiday or a new car - each to his own, eh??!

..and don't forget to mention, that he still paid 84Chf for some "Stube" food.

Except it wasn't "Stube" food, as you would know if you'd actually read the opening post. It was posh food, cooked in the same kitchen that prepared food for the fancy restaurant upstairs, served in a much more comfortable environment.

The 84 CHF included a starter, two main courses, two puddings and six drinks.

I don't think that's unreasonable at all, considering the quality of the food we ate.

But each to his own. I understand they sell meatballs at Ikea for 37 rappen...

I don't feel comfortable in the company of the ostentatiously rich.

It's bad enough having to associate with them at work. At the weekend, I'd rather be around normal people (which category includes the unostentatiously rich).

But that's just me. You can take the lad out of Cannock, and all that...

Hey - and you know where I'm from..........

84 CHF is small change for a good meal and yes, I have to agree, that the company in the
higher end places is not always so desirable.... Have listened in to some right pratts upon occasion.......
