What's 0815?
08/15 refers to the German MG08 (as in 1908) in the 1915 variant.
The term stands in modern German for "standard issue" or "average".

Re: Eat well, eat cheap...

Ja, so ... I guess Switzerland is an expensive place to eat out ... and to find real value for money ....... well ... I guess the joints I eat out at ..... at Sfr 50 for two, plus beers, must be a bit out of the way for you high flyers sorts...?..huh?

And before I get donged .... I have eaten in restaurants, at Sfr150 for two, including a couple glasses Sect ..... but we dont do that often!...Only for special occasions.

Hence the reasons, I guess ... for having the menus, with prices, posted outside the restaurants...?

Oh, before you right-off the Döna Kebab places ..... you can do a sit-down meal in them - those with restaurant style tables ..... very nicely ... with masses of fresh salads.... everything seperate on plate, instead of rolled into a roll - very reasonably priced.

"Bog standard" is probably the best English translation that captures the underlying spirit of the idiom

It's bad enough having to associate with them at work
Wow, there are, like, rich teachers?

Lunch time is when you pull out your ostentatiously anti posh Lidl (Carrefour works even better) ready made 1Euro lunch pack. It quickly sorts the comfortable folks from the poser folks.

This was a special occasion. You can take it from me we are not high flyers.

Nor are we dissing kebab houses, silver-service restaurants or anything in between.

We are just happy because we had some unusually nice food, at a decent price, in an atmosphere where we and our dayglo jackets felt quite comfortable. It occurred to us afterward that we've had similarly pleasant experiences (minus the dayglo jackets) every time we've gone for a certain type of restaurant, so we thought we'd pass the tip along.

Awwww....matching outfits.

There is a great Kebab place in Yverdon, in the main pedestrian street. It's no Stube but the food is great.

Tonka beans are perfectly safe, according to the Internets, and they're always right.

So that's settled, then.

But isn't that because we're talking about Asian food in Switzerland? I mean Tiffins isn't exactly the pinnacle of authenticity is it?
Their Pad Thai is the best in town and equal to Thai versions. But I'm easily pleased and could eat it 'till it comes outta my ears. Pad Phet Med Mamuang is also scrumptious. Eating too much will certainly make it harder to slide between the honies on the benches though

"BOG Standard" I understood to mean "British or German", meaning only BOG standard is acceptable. But we digress. I'm sure someone's on Wikipedia already.

The Mere Catherine seafood place on the Niederdorf in Zurich has a nice bar next door called Le Philosoph. Order food at the bar and it'll come from the same kitchen as the restaurant. Same goes for New Point at Albisriederplatz. Their Iskender kebab is great.

For Zurich, it can be the pinnacle of flavour. So while you worry about your elusive authenticity, we Asians will worry about actually enjoying the food.

Oh no, I never worry about authenticity! But the next time i'm looking for an assessment of Thai food, I'll certainly rush to the first Sri Lankan/Canadian I can find. Asians are all the same don't you know.

..good thing Asia finally has a spokesperson. Is that the North American individuality that shines through..or simply your overestimated ego?

Re: Eat well, eat cheap...

Thank you for that Dougal's Breakfast! We lived in Weggis for a few months and discovered a few good little places there too. For example, I became addicted to the veggie pizza at the Seehotel Gotthard, it is divine, needless to say the first time I saw the price of pizza in this country I flipped! I slowly got used to it.
Now that we are in Luzern and don't want to drive and then walk to a restaurant we go to Meggen. We have tried about five restaurants there and I have really enjoyed them. As for the final bill we can't make it under CHF 80, even at the hole-in-the-wall thai restaurant in Luzern.
Love threads about food and restaurants

On a similar topic:

I find Globus foodhall in Bellvue to be good value for lunch. Costs me 22chf with a drink for hot and tasty Asian food. Much better IMO than Mishio or similar, and whatever I get from Migros for lunch is nasty and seems to cost exactly 14chf every time. Lunch at Totos or similar is always 35-40chf which is crazy for lunch on a semi-daily basis.

Imagine that the manager of the Asian place their originally made his apprenticeship as a "patissier", but when taking a job on high-seas steamer on the day of his start was told that the main-cook hired was not available and so started working as THE cook in charge. After a stay in a company for flavours (Flachsmann) he went into the production of Ravioli, and then later on took over the place mentioned. I am delighted to see that his cooking is liked, and will tell him accordingly soon
