That usually means a sinus infection, and those can linger for weeks without antibiotics, and I do not use antibiotics lightly... In the last 10 years, maybe 4 times and 3 of those were for sinus infections.

Good luck!

I had this crap flu, then played ping pong with my daughter trading who knows what kind of cold, and I suspect with a sinus infection through it all as things were coming out of my nose that appeared to be intelligent life, constantly. Finally succumbed to the wife's insistence that I take antibiotics and I was right in 2 days. Haven't taken those in maybe 20 years, glad I did though . Of course having doctor inlaws we have a banana box full of prescription meds including a full run of antibiotics at all times (expired 2009 but still worked ).

The thing that helped the most with the flu symptoms was NeoCitran from the pharmacy. Great stuff.

I had flu a few weeks before christmas, just when I thought that was cleared up, I got a headache for three straight days. The pharmacist reckoned it was the sinuses and gave me some decongestant and ibuprofen then told me to see the doctor if symptons didn't go in a couple of days.

Couple of days later, I went to the doctor, who gave me stronger decongestants (I think) and even larger doses of ibuprofen. The headaches went for a while and I felt relatively normal over christmas except I would keep going a bit deaf in one ear (like when you go swimming). Headache is back today and I have some very strange accoustics going on in that ear, must be at least 4 weeks since the flu went. Guess I'm off to see the doctor again tonight.

Please tell me that the seasonal flu vaccine is easy to come by in Switzerland. Not exactly something you can stock up on before leaving home.

Re: This year's flu - Damn...!

This place is not exactly big on flu shots, considering side effects and other risks, it might be easier to just get the flu. Our docs generally discourage us and our child to get a flu shot, I wouldn't ever get one just to avoid a flu. The only thing I got was the darn N1H1 jab, good for nothing.

There seem to be a lot of respiratory viruses around lately, just like last year. Normally I would be immune but with a creche age child and over heated apt it's hard to shake. Herbal teas (mixes for bronchitis) seem to work for me, massive doses of vit C. And avoiding packed places.

I wouldn't do it if health care in CH worked as it does at home. I need ATBs once every 10 years but then you have to fight to get it, I was given ATBs for sinus inf that were poorly manufactured and didn't work, not mentioning (Metha, now we only use Sandoz) the doc usually does not swipe to get a specific ATBs, not multi spectrum crap. We get our nose and throat properly swiped to get the exact bacteria that needs to be killed, back home, it takes long but at least the ATBs are specific. Same goes for anything stronger than homeopathical nonsense. Until this year to get Ibuprofen we had to swear to the doc we are not going to overdose, etc etc. The pharmacist would refuse, when elsewhere in world it was over the counter. It didn't interest them one least bit that Dafalgan does nothing for me and kept pushing some sugar pills. Bah. Better old ATBs for a serious sinus inf than saline nose wash, one spreads it to other places this way.

Interesting take on vaccines ... but I won't bite into that as vaccines for some people are like religion.

I am in neither camps, just an experience with out docs over here, other people I am sure have different experiences. I do think vaccines are not as big, flu shots incl, since CH has the lowest rate in vaccination in Europe if I remember well.

And apparently a LOT of people sick with the flu ... who will go on to infect vulnerable people such as infants and the elderly. The research on vaccines is very robust. I've found that Germans often choose not to vaccinate as well, although they do not base their decisions on actual research, but rather on hearsay (and a cultural affinity for homeopathy and other under-studied branches of healthcare). Perhaps because the real research is written in English, and not exactly easy to understand or to find without knowing the terminology.

My son just heard about shingles, and I told him that his generation will probably be spared as they have had the chickenpox vaccine en masse. No latent vericella-zoster viruses hiding in their systems.

Re: This year's flu - Damn...!

Anyone know why the H1N1 vaccine had such little effect this year ? Flu jabs usually work fine for me. 3 weeks later and still knackered fighting this flu.

Re: This year's flu - Damn...!

My wife's had the flu for three weeks now (the doctor reckons she got re-infected about 2 weeks in) and then I thought I had caught it from her, because I was displaying flu-like symptoms (sore throat, incessant cough, mucus, etc, etc), but when conjunctivitis set in last night I knew something was a bit freaky with my flu.
As it turns out, according to the doctor I saw today, I don't have the flu, just another type of virus that simulates the flu - the name was too long to remember. So here I am at home, coughing up a lung and quarantined due to contageous conjunctivitis.

Re: This year's flu - Damn...!

Just a quick "heads-up" on the nature of flu vaccines. Some of you may already know this, but the yearly flu jab is designed to combat the 3 most commonly expected strains for the forthcoming flu season, based on early serological data (and decided by the WHO). It is therefore entirely possible that you may catch a flu strain not present in the vaccine. It is also a fact that it doesn't provide 100% protection, no vaccine does. However, the flu jab will protect the vast majority of people and subsequently prevent them from passing it on to the more vulnerable eg those who refuse it (you can thank me later for helping to protect you ). There is no separate "swine flu"jab this year as it is one of the strains in the 2010/11 season vaccine. Another myth; you cannot "catch" flu from a flu jab. The virus is dead, deceased, shuffled off this mortal coil and gone to meet its maker. Yes, some adverse reactions can be "flu-like" and for some people can be quite unpleasant, but nothing like genuine, 2-week, high-fever influenza.
Thank you for your attention.

Re: This year's flu - Damn...!

Sounds like a classic sinus infection... The Doc will likely give you a sinus x-ray and a blood test and send you to the pharmacy with a prescription for about 5 days of antibiotics.

Good luck! Sinus infections can be painful and, unfortunately, are hard to shake without antibiotics.

Hope that's all that is involved, one guy was telling me that it wasn't unknown for the sinuses to be (painfully) flushed out by the doctor. Haven't checked the accuracy of that, but gave me pause for thought.

All my friends who get constant sinus infections (as do I) swear by the nettipot. I refuse to resort to it- find it disgusting, although I know it makes sense.

Re: This year's flu - Damn...!

I used to swear by nasal saline wash, but actually it somehow gives me ear troubles. Does nothing, plus it feels like I am just washing all the germs into other places that were healthy. Simple Rhinostop (it's spray) works better, they have it in pharmacies. The spray stays put where it's supposed to be.
