Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

MaKita, go back to your doctor and insist that he explains exactly what he means by 'irregular heartbeats' and if this is cause for concern. If it is, he should explain the possible consequences for you and your baby. If he can't do this properly then ask to be referred to a specialist who can. If language is a problem then take your partner or a friend to help with that.

Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

That's scary! I hope you're doing okay, and if it makes you feel any better, apparently it's not unheard of for perfectly healthy babes to have some irregular heart rhythms. So, yes, figure out exactly what is happening, but try not to be too sad, hopefully everything will be okay!

hi Anjela, well the doctors from uster spital, send me yesterday to Cardiologist in kinderspital zurich, there the specialist told me sometimes the problem go away alone, but he cant still found what really is making the problem.
Today in my pregnancy control we saw it again happend but more often than yesterday, the heart stop and then change the pace and change like every 12 seconds, yesterday was like every 30 seconds.
i supposed to see the doctor the 21 of february (for that time the doctor say can see if something change) .
but this really stress me, i even dont wanna prepare the baby things , because am afraid what can happend in the future.

Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

Dear MaKita, I personally think that six weeks is too long to wait for a second visit to the cardiologist, especially as you are clearly stressing about it, which won't help with your health or that of the baby. What does your obstetrician or midwife have to say?

Anyone out there with suggestions for people in MaKita's area who might be able to help or talk to her in person?

well i also think is too long, but the doctor say some change can see normally after 32 weeks of pregnancy (well i hope the situation change).
my obtetrician saw me today, and 04 of february i have one appointment.
so i supposed just to wait...

Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

Ok, the 4th of February is better than the 27th. Try and keep yourself calm, find something to occupy your mind. Stressing about this won't help (I know it's easy to say).
The doctors are probably right and the problem will resolve itself as the baby develops. But do go back to the hospital if you feel that 'he' is in distress or hasn't moved for a while.
I really would suggest that you ask your obstetrician for the name of a midwife or health visitor, just so that you have someone to talk to.

Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

Stay in close contact with your OB/GYN and do call him if you have a doubt.
But also do believe them when they say that a lot of these cases disappear later on in the pregnancy. The doctors here are quite abrupt and straight to the point, they'll tell you what they think.

I'm so sorry to hear what you're gong through.

They're very competent hear when it comes to cardiology for children, you can trust them.

Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

Hi Makita
Is this your first baby? Just to let you know that I had the same (or similar perhaps) problem in one of my 4 pregnancies and everything turned out okay. It is a terrible worry though. I understand what you are going through. Also, my 4th child was born with a triple heartbeat. It was investigated and everything appears normal. She's developing normally (is 15 months old). We'll go back when she's 3 for another check to see if there are any changes. I feel very confident in the doctors and staff at the Kinderspital.
Perhaps you could get in touch with a midwife, they often are more helpful than rushed doctors.
I wish you the best.

Really reassuring message and I agree with you.. except for the last line.
I found the midwives did not have sufficient knowledge to answers specific and technical medical questions. A few years later, I didn't find the nurses could either, except for the brilliant paediatric intensive care unit nurses in child cardio-thoracic surgery.

Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

You must have some experience with sick kids.
I should have been more specific. I meant perhaps a midwife could help her deal with the stress and worry (refer her to appropriate resources. Perhaps accupuncture, massage, someone to talk to... sometimes you feel very alone and are not sure what resources are available)

Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

Just my own, and I thank God every day that I am given to live for he is now a healthy fine teenager. It hasn't always been so.. spent a very long time between home and hospital with my cardiac toddler, each tiny step to health, each lovely year to hope, until one day he was given a clear bill of health and I finally remembered to breathe.

Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

Oh, Makita. It is always very stressful for a mom-to-be to hear that there may be any kind of anomaly at all in their pregnancy.

If you were in the US, you would have been immediately sent for a Level II ultrasound to rule out any congenital heart or lung abnormality. If all was normal with that scan, you would have been sent to a Perinatologist for the remainder of your pregnancy.

Having said that, in all likelihood, everything is fine and what you are experiencing is just the normal development of your baby's heart and lungs which are understandably immature at only 27 weeks gestation.

However, you should ask your OBGYN if a Level II ultrasound is a possibility. It would put everyone's mind at ease. (P.S. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Hospital Administration and ran a High-Risk Perinatal Testing Unit for 7 years in a large teaching hospital in the US, so I am not just giving layperson's advice).

Keep asking questions and don't take "no" for an answer if you are uncomfortable with your quality of care. Remember, it's YOUR kid and no question is too stupid!

Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

I had a few days of worry in the Kinderspital with my 4 year old who had nephritis shortly before Christmas, but I can't imagine having those worries last for so long. I am glad your son is doing well.

This is a bit off-topic and I hope I am not being too forward or out of place by mentionning the importance to anyone who reads this of registering with Swiss Stem Cells. It's very easy, just requires filling out a form and sending in some swabs.

I hope it all turns out well. The doctors do know what they are doing and I know from personal experience with my own children ( both of whom were born prematurely ) that it can be very difficult just to wait and let things develop at their own pace.

If there was any inkling of danger the doctors would have you in like a shot, so the fact that they are calm about it should be a good sign.

Once again all the best, and I know there is an angel out there looking after your little baby personally.

All will go well, they said it could be normal and disappear. Doctors move very quickly if there's a real problem. The very fact that they're not in a hurry is a good reassuring sign
Bless you

Re: irregular heartbeats from my baby

When my daughter was being born she developed irregular heartbeats during the process of birth. The midwife decided to help me cope with this (my wife was semi-conscious – it was a 2 day birth) I should count the beats between contractions. I have never felt more scared at any other point in my life.
We now have a very beautiful 11 year old girl who races around the school playground and represents her school in several sports. If it is possible to have a positive in such a situation it is that the struggle we shared before the birth has made all three of us stronger in the love we all now feel.
