Hello, Epidural is used at Pourtales, confirmation from last week from a friend of us. We're been through two births there, both without problems, no need for Epidural. We've had an English mum friend here too, gave birth at Pourtalès and was happy there. The hospital is new, only about 6-7 years old. They don't speak much english but portugese might be handy, at least for the nurses.
As for the insurance, you'll have to confirm your choice as soon as possible after your arrival for yourself and pre-insurance for your baby too - before the birth, as somebody has noted.
Depending on your level of comfort, the price for the health insurance can vary quite a lot but you could basically get along with some 250chf/month for yourself. A site that summarizes it is www.comparis.ch
. We chose Concordia, reasonable price for reasonable services and they have an office close to Neuchatel.
Don't let yourself rush into semi- or full private hospital care unless you need it.
