Does Swisscare basic insurance cover epidural cost?

Hello,

I am going to have my first baby in 10 days and wondering to ask if cost for the painkiller, like epidural cost, during delivery will be covered by the basic insurance or not?

Does anyone have experience with Swisscare for this case?

IF not, do you know the cost at CHUV?

Thanks in advance

I thought all costs were covered? Could there really be a situation where you only get painkillers if you pay for them? That's a hard line to take...

Everything is cover! Your basic insurance won,t give you options on doctors outside of a restricted list.

At the hospital, it won,t allowed you to have a private room. You can ask for one and pay the extra which can come around 200 per days (I don,t know for all hospitals). And of course IF they have a room available...

Good luck with the labor and to be on the safe side call you own insurance and ask for the details!

Re: Does Swisscare basic insurance cover epidural cost?

Im sure it would cover it - this is a commonly used form of pain relief not an optional extra!

try searching for Periduralanästhesie which is epidural in german or Spinalanästhesie which is spinal blocks.....

Good luck with the birth!

Re: Does Swisscare basic insurance cover epidural cost?

Hi LS

The lists you linked to are the active medications that would be administered by an "epidural". The epidural is really just the term for the injection into the spinal canal (ouch) and you'll be given lidocaine or something and that should be covered.

You need to check and not take my word for it but I'd bet my shirt that you can relax as pain relief will be provided (although this being Switzerland you might have to ask - my wife did and she used some colourful English to get her message across!!). All paid for and sorted.

Have a nice baby and use as much bad language as you need.

We already answered you this exact question in Insurance thread! Why asking the same exact question twice???
