public schools in Basel: can you chose where to go?

we have just got to know that we can get that beautiful apartment in Basel. I am very happy and in the process to say yes.. BUT we have been talking with friends and colleagues and they all reminded us how importance are the schools to decide where to go and live.
yeah. school in Kleinbasel are known to be not the best in basel. I believe that this is a reason why family with kids are looking for houses in the BL area.

But tell me. is it really true that you cannot chose the public school you want for your child in Switzerland? and if i want to enroll my child somewhere else in the Basel area? any law against???

thanks for your reply.

Re: public schools in Basel and basel land

My son is currently at ISB. We have been in Basel for 4 years and dont have any foreseeable plans to move from here. So we have decided that its best that we should transfer our son to Swiss public school starting from Grade 1.

My son currently speaks no German. He only knows a some words. I am not sure which place we should move so that the school he goes to has some tolerance to his language situation and has organised program for integration for foreigners.

Could you share your experiences about the school your children are attending and which Geminde they fall into?

Thanks

Re: public schools in Basel: can you chose where to go?

My daughter is also starting Grade 1 in a public school and she doesn't speak a word of German! We are coming from USA although family's first language is spanish (a mess...) so she has always attended schools in english language.
I've been told that the zip code 4054 has good integration classes for foreigners. Also the zip code 4059, Riehen and Allschwil.
Please, let me know if you find more information. We are about to decide whether to rent apartment in Riehen or Bruderholz...
