Easy.

Buy a motorcycle (or two, or three, ...), at least one without a passenger seat.

Then, get back in touch.

It did say "gentlemen"... added especially for those who might think that "real men" are those featured in "Rocky", "Rambo" etc., clearly the slightly off-colour emoticons attest to the fact that you appear to be the latter

I love it, the further the trueisms get from each other, the more correct they are. Lovely, a society that thinks differently, disagrees on that and likes to stand up and have a damn good argument about it. Wicked, that is success!!!

In Swiss families, I have the impression that the ones that decide family matters -or important matters of any kind- are women.

They are much more direct, taxative and authoritative

IImpressions?
Well, my husband grew up with 3 sisters and a VERY dominant mother. He always claims his life was hell but I think he was the spoiled only son. However he DID decide at an early age never to marry a Swiss woman.

Were these women also aware that they are lesbians?
Probably not. Most of them are likely straight as an arrow but many Swiss women's preference for 'practical' clothing and short haircuts might mislead the unskilled eye.

Rgiht, most of them are straight! the guy is confusing shyness with another thing. The fact that most of swiss women don't care at him is not a probe they are lesbians. Sure, they're not sexy a south americans or italians, but they do have their reason, although hidden underneath their front barrier.

Re: Swiss men weak, Swiss women strong, what's your take?

Yes they do tend to be a bit more shy here, whereas in Southern Europe, women express their femininity (generally with good taste) and have more confidence, regardless of their looks. But then men tend to view them differently too.

In Italy a woman is loved for being a woman, no matter how she looks. The idea of adoration and a protective attitude towards her, seem to go together. It makes women more confident.

Regardless of all the education and social structures, the bottom line is both genders want to be appealing to the other.

Something tells me that is not a real choice...

I question strongly the concept of weakness and strength as brought up in this thread. But as I can't remember having seen philosophical discussion being succesful on EF, let's keep it short:

gender roles are defined relatively to a cultural and historical contexts. As none of both concepts are static, there is no surprise discovering that things change depending on place and time. The pace of evolution is however not set in stone (I love antithesis).

However, moral judgement induced by the choice of those two adjectives is also related to a preestabished conceptions and projection of values outside of their own context. And that's the problem. A Dane who can not cook for himself is not a feminized wimpy in the eyes of other Danes, but a real male who do not rely on female to be independent and adult man free of symbiotic necessities warranted by mothers to a child. In short: if you can't cook yourself, you are a mummy's boy. Now try the explaining that to an Italian man...

Nice post.

My view is that strength is actually the ability to be able to understand, tolerate and shift cultural paradigms as necessary. The strong person is not a reflection of one culture's strength but rather they express the best out of all the cultures that they have been in contact with and express stronger personality than cultural stereotype.

Men spending their time proving to others that they are not a woman don't have any time left to prove to themselves that they are a man.

No, it's not from Confucius.

or a musician, or a scientist who is busy having life and pursuing something more interesting.

It really depends, doesn't it.

For me a man is not a real man if he just walks by you when you are struggling with a heavy suitcase. Or serves himself first and then notices his kid doesn't have food yet. I could care less if a guy does not know how to cook nor would waste time making assumptions about his masculinity. Btw, being DIY is very masculine, innit..

Most Italian men I know are excellent cooks, as am I. That's why I like Italians, we always talk about food, motorcycles, and women.
