Does anyone have bad allergies right now in Basel?

For some reason my husband and I have had a mean case of the allergies these past couple of days...is there something blooming right now? I checked pollen counts and didn't see anything. Isn't it too cold for that?

Thank-you!

Same here. And I visit an allergy specialist regularly. He was stumped as well, since there are no pollens around. Wonder what else I am allergic to now.

Dust mites ! hoover yer carpet !

Kidding.

Pollen count is too low just now to spark any reactions.

Do you have pets?

Re: Does anyone have bad allergies right now in Basel?

My guess would be what breagh was joking about... dust mites and / or mold as the apartments here are much more air-tight than they were in Florida for sure.

Make sure you're opening your windows to allow some fresh (DRY!) air in as our steamy hot breath combined with radiant heat makes for some serious potential for mold... as well as whatever the heck it is here that makes it so darned dusty.

Mine aren't bothering me any more than usual, a sneeze or three when I wake up in the morning, sorted pretty quickly with a dose of otc allergy meds (sudafed + chlor trimeton) which a good friend kindly helped me restock from the US. You can get that combo here (kinda) in Aleve allergy sinus or something like that - crazy expensive if you need much though, I think it comes out to 1chf per tablet here (as opposed to not even $5 for a box of 48 in the US)

Re: Does anyone have bad allergies right now in Basel?

We determined that we are sick with a head cold...again. I lived in one of the most polluted cities in the States & hardly ever got sick. Now I'm in the beautifully clean air of Switzerland and I'm sick all the time. I've been confusing these head colds with allergies because allergies are the only thing I'm used to. It had been about 3 years since hubby & I had a cold before we came to Switzerland, and now I have gotten sick with a head cold 4 times this Winter. Why is this? I'm so annoyed & tired of being sick.

We do have 2 kitties, but have never had a problem with them in 10 years. I vacuum my apartment almost everyday & I open the windows reg.

I went to the pharmacy & they said that I have a cold, not allergies. The only medicine they will give me is this Sinupret that does nothing except make me break out in a red rash on my face...must be allergic to that too! Oh well...could be worse. I'm ready for the sun!!

Go to your doctor and ask him7her to refer you to an allergy clinic. My doctor told me that I was always getting a colt, then after just one visit to the clinic they found out I was allergic to dust mites!

Re: Does anyone have bad allergies right now in Basel?

I think the OP was right to begin with and that the doctors and pharmacists are wrong! I'm also having hayfever type allergies the past week or so. I've had a *severe* dust mite allergy for years so I'm in the habit of vaccumming and mopping regularly, no carpets, changing sheets every 5-7 days etc. Dust mites give me rashes, headaches, sinus trouble. What I've been having the past week is completely different. Itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing. I'm quite certain it's not due to indoor allergies!! Yesterday I was out walking and with this warm front we've had, a few things are blooming already! I hope this doesn't mean four months or more of hayfever this year!!

I have to agree with this too. My husband has had his allergies bloom in the last few days. It appears to be the warmth starting spring early.

Near Zurich: - I have had itchy eyes for the last few days - probably hazel pollen (I am sensitive to it). Better earlier than later when real spring comes.

Exactly! I'm very close to you in Adliswil. I highly recommend Samilisan Dry Eye Relief or Allergy drops. Both help a lot.

Re: Does anyone have bad allergies right now in Basel?

A lot of people are complaining about the same symptoms at the moment, and there were several articles about it in local newspapers.

It seems that because of the unusually warm weather and the total absence of rain and wind for quite a long time, the air is extremely polluted in Switzerland at the moment.

Most Swiss towns have largely overcome their tolerated limits of microparticles. Specialists advise young children, old people and people with respiratory troubles and allergies to avoid going out and rinse their faces/eyes thoroughly after a trip out.

I really want a good downpour. It would clean up most of the remaining snow and help clean up everything.

On the plus side, my snowdrops (schneeglocken) are coming up.

What about hayfever? It feels like that rather than a cold but usually doesn't hit me until April or so. Seems way too early(

I'm getting worse and worse as an asthmatic - and the last week in the Zuri area (or actually North CH) has left me barely able to breath - despite upping meds to a level where I should be able to breath underwater !

In that case it makes sense that it's partly due to pollution. But not to worry, it appears that this is the last sunny day for a while... On the flip side, I'll be glad to quit itching my eyes!

Here's some reading for your watery eyes:

Hay fever: help yourself naturally

And Yoikes! This explains a lot:

"...Current symptomatic allergic rhinitis and rhinitis medication use are associated with a significantly increased risk of unexpectedly dropping a grade in summer examinations."
