Experience with Swiss schools in the Veveyse district

Hi there,

I'm moving over in the summer and am interested to know about any experiences with local schools (elementary/primary) in the Veveyse district of Fribourg or bordering parts of Vaud/Fribourg. My kids will be 7 and 9 when we move. We want to live within communting distance of both Vevey and Fribourg.

I'm also considering international schooling (though tough to get a place it seems) in the Vevey area, but want to evaluate both options. I see there are lots of debate threads on on pros and cons of Swiss vrs Intl. Im keeping an open mind and am specifically looking for any experiences in this region as we would like to take a look at some Swiss schools when we do a recon in a couple of weeks time.

I see that in larger population centres, schools often have integration programs, but I am not so sure this would be the case in smaller towns.

Any input welcome.

The towns in Veveyse are teeny tiny. Not sure how much integration support you will have there.

The problem with village schools is always the schedule. If you check out the websites of the towns they often have info schools such as schedules and stuff.
For example Attalens:

If you want to stay mid way between Fribourg & Vevey you could consider Bulle (Gruyere district). In Bulle you are more likely to have integration classes and options for kids to stay at school if there is no one home.
If you check the Bulle.ch website under education there are some options for kids to go to school early and stay at school during the lunch break.

Re: Experience with Swiss schools in the Veveyse district

Thanks, miniMia for the comments and links.

I thought as much concerning the tiny towns, what about Chatel-St-Denis?

We initially thought that Bulle would be too far from Vevey for my Wife, who as a teacher would have more chances of future employment in the various international schools in that area.

Probably, we should check out Bulle.

Many thanks, any other comments welcome.

Chatel St Denis is the biggest of the little towns in Veveyse, 5,000 pop. But Bulle is 3+ times the size with 18,000. C-s-D is certainly cute and has the best fondue in the area.

I don't know what your idea of a long commute is but about Bulle is 1/2 hr from Friboug and 1/2 hour from Vevey.

Chatel St. Denis is 20 mins to Vevey & 40 to Fribourg.

Cheers.

We will check them both on our recon. Actually its only 1 week to go (half term here in uk) and we will be over.

Looking forward to that fondue

Are you living in Bulle miniMia? I guess at 18K there should at least be a handful of expats there or there abouts?

Re: Experience with Swiss schools in the Veveyse district

No. Our house is in the neighboring district, Lavaux. And sadly (for my waistline) we used to hit Chatel St Denis to investigate which of the 3 restaurants had the best fondue.... The answer kept changing so we kept having to go back. It was a struggle!

I know at least one EFer in Bulle. He works at a pub so.... You may want to be nice to him: Anthony1406.

Anyway being near Vevey (and not so far from Lausanne) AND close to Fribourg I think you'll have a virtual cornucopia of expat friends, outings, etc.

Good luck with your move!
