Re: Awkward Ob/Gyn Visit- difference between US and Swiss methods?

Best is if you also take one of your young children with you, and he says - "nothing to be shy about, they have to learn some time"

..and if it is a little "competition" amongst the women in the village - who is on "du" terms and who is on "sie" terms with the infamous Dr. X..

Apparently he offers "du" automatically as he delivers your 4th kid.
Not something I am looking to strive for Ka Pai, in case we are going to go there again

It took him a couple of times bumping into me before he recognised me .. but I'm guessing that he probably knows me better - ahem - from other parts of my body .....
reminds me of this Coupling episode where a girl is on a blind date and it turns out to be her gynecologist. And a male friend comments that this is a bit like buying a book when you have already peeked at the ending..

Thinking about it, if he has 4 patients an hour, thats about 160 a week. Most he only sees once a year. You really think he is able to put a face to all those.........

Well put it this way, in the village square, right next to the bread van, I wasn't going to put it to the test.

Okay, maybe I have been in Europe too long, maybe I am too old or had too many members of the medical profession look at my VAGINA, but you went to a Gynecologist not an ORL. Geez.

G-forbid you ever have medical problems down there aka the VAGINAL region and have to be examined constantly. If you do Xanax might help.

All I care is that the Dr is a excellent technician and don't give a rats a55 to where I undress, how I undress nor how I am splayed in front of him/her.

Rant over and get those annual check-ups they can save your life.

Ps, I hope you had the courtesy to wax before your visit.

Well, you never know who knows who here or if you might have a blind date; it is always best to leave a good impression.

Edit or "P.S" - he actually once complimented me on my fallopian tubes!!!
Ha, I had something like this - I'm normally quite good at accepting compliments gracefully, but the nurse who said admiringly: 'You have really nice genitalia' whilst inserting a catheter for my c-section op left me speechless!

And yes, all sounds very standard for the Gynae here, including the slightly bizarre small talk, although my lovely woman doctor does at least have the little 'shower cubicle' and fills time taking notes until I'm completely dressed.

I was quite surprised to discover that an annual check-up is the norm, coming from the UK where it's a smear every 3-5 years and that's it. I was even more surprised to discover at my first appt that the check-up also includes a manual breast exam...

All silliness aside, my midwife wife always felt slightly uncomfortable being examined by the doctor she would see on almost a daily basis in a working capacity.

Hey, J.L-P, given this post and the undeserved groan on the OP, perhaps you might want to go and get those sympathy levels checked next time you see the doc, eh?

Re: Awkward Ob/Gyn Visit- difference between US and Swiss methods?

Had to smile when I read the gown bit. Back in my home country I never came across anything like that and sometimes there was no curtain or anything else so while the doc was preparing... I was preparing at the other end of the room. I never found it uncomfortable and had no problem with the device either... maybe I'm just too OK with being naked and stuff But maybe I'm so "untraumatized" because I've only had female gynecologists. I could never ever imagine a man examining me (down there). When I had to go to a specialized ultrasound examination I almost fainted when the doc turned out to be a guy. Yuck! Never that!

Ummm, we are talking about a gynecological visit... have you ever been on one? Even as a partner you can be in the room and ask to look and see how say a speculum is used. Having a good technician is what counts. Sympathy for what? DB get off your high horse and live in the real world. Groan stays, some of us are adults.

Wow, you really are a poet.

OP, while I have a really nice and discrete fab ObGyn, the maternity one was attrocious, she took the liberty to patronize, scold and yell at knickerless, 9mo prego mom hanging in that lovely chair, legs in a stirrups and those mirrors inside, ugh. Turned out my questions were completely justified and I really wished she lost her license. We complained and refused any further sight of that wretched creature . Hope she treats others differently.

Anyways. Coming from a similar, nudity prone culture, it doesn't bother me to walk to the chair with my knickers off. Though, it is somewhat more lady like to actually take them off right before hopping on that cursed chair (and put them on right after). Skirt, as has been said, is really good, miniskirt so it does not bulk up when rolled up, and when it is warmer, these, you don't have to take off anything:

I've experienced much worse, but this isn't a "look at me, I'm brave and I've done it all before, so get over yourself Dorothy" thread is it?

It seems like nobody can share their surprising or disturbing experiences of culture shock on EF these days without some jaded old timer coming along and berating them for daring to be surprised or disturbed.

You were new here once, weren't you? A very long time ago...

Shooting down somebody because they feel embarrassed half naked in front of a stranger...

Man, that's cold.

Back on topic, I like it here. Back home where there are no babies born, you turn 20 and you hear every single time about your ovaries, tubes, womb getting old, you hear about percentage of genetic and congenital disorders growing with age, you are made to feel so guilty, I find it very civilized in CH.

Did it hurt? Was it an annual exam? We are talking about ob-gyn and nothing else.

When I came on to the EF there was was hazing- people spoke truthfully without worring if they were pc or hurting feelings. I stayed without having the need to be fluffied. All communities need balance and different perspectives to make them interesting- I am the bitchy one with a vagina and you are the "oh, poor you" one (I've said this before and you said I was "illiterate" which I agreed on).

Share away, but sometimes it is silly.

Diversity is needed, sure, shooting down people, telling them to suck it up and grow up is something else. I doubt that those years ago cheap shots at people were really tolerated. Most people do not have a problem saying vagina. Ladies, no need to patronize, keep your bras on.

For some people, yearly exam is nothing else than that. For some, with some other tolerance level of modesty/embarrassment/pain, it's big deal, so what. Doesn't make them redneck or backwards.

For some, it's a painful procedure, since their organ down their is miniscule and the smallest size of the tools are too big. I have an advice for those, check in your home countries for disposable, smooth plastic (2fr in pharmacies) mirrors (we call them mirrors since they used to reflect the vaginal walls, I think it is a speculum in En) in small sizes and take them with you for your annual check up.
