Maternity leave for working husbands

Hi all,
I was wondering if the working husbands are allowed by law in Switzerland to take paid/unpaid time off from work as they are in the USA (mine works for a retail/manufacturing type of a business ). We are expecting our second in July and currently live and work permanently here in Switzerland.
Thanks for the advice.

Don't know if there is a legal minimum but my current company gives new dads 3 days off (paid) and my previous company used to give 5 days.

1 day off for paid paternity leave, plus what your company is willing give you.

Just Wiki'd it - Dads are entitled to paid paternity leave of 3 days in CH.

That's a pathetically short time! It was okay in the past when families were less mobile and were more likely to be living near extended family, for help. But now that so many people are living a comparitively isolated lfe, that extra support from the other parent is increasingly important. And that is without even getting into the aspects of diversity, where it could be that the mother would be better to go back to work, with the father being at home instead.

Seems to go hand in hand with low taxes. Some of the Scandinavian countries have extended periods of maternity / paternity leave but their taxes are very high.

Gotta fund it somehow.

On the other hand - I just saw that the US doesn't give any maternity leave (paid, anyway). Blimey; I would have thought they would have been offering something similar to what's on offer in Europe.

US - 6 -8 weeks is normal maternity leave in US - not sure if it is 'required' or just up to company- but it is usually paid. You can take up to a year off for maternity or paternity & still keep your job - BUT it's not paid.

Re: Maternity leave for working husbands

Yes. This is my understanding - in regards to both the Swiss and American laws. It does seem a bit behind the times for a Euro country for only 3 days leave here. I am American, and due in a week - and am a little bit concerned about only a 3-day leave - as it's been a little slow making new friends that I can feel okay about leaning on - it takes time to get these connections going. So, alas. We are healthy and happy to have a new addition - stocking up the fridge as much as possible. My mother in-law is here - so that is nice too. Good luck with all this - June is still plenty of time for planning! Reach out as much as possible! People have recommended making meals and freezing them just to help be prepared. I thought about talking to a local restaurant for maybe ordering prepared meals a couple times a week - just a thought. .

I think wiki is wrong. I researched it when my little one was born 3 years ago and it was 2 days. This was confirmed by my Swiss employer (unless they tricked me of course)...

Re: Maternity leave for working husbands

Info on this thread says (as of Oct 2010) there is no legal obligation for paid paternity leave and it is at the discretion of the employer.

Actually - I was mis-guided and didn't know the "law" per say - just my husband's company's practice. 3 days.

I believe my employer gives 5 days paid paternity. Not much...

Re: Maternity leave for working husbands

My husband got 2 days, at his previous company he would only have had 1 and if we'd already had a child, he would have had 3 days.

Re: Maternity leave for working husbands

My husband gets 5 days from his work (paid). And beside those days, he took 3 extra weeks coming from his overtime and vacations. So he'll be home for a full month.

And it is very welcome to have the help of your husband as much as possible at the beginning.

Good Luck.
