Herpes Simplex Eye Disease

Please be careful and be aware that you can get Herpes Simplex Eye Disease from someone that has an outbreak of Herpes Simplex 1 (non sexual) on the mouth. I didn't know, smooched someone and now have it for the rest of my life. I'm currently my third occurance since last August; the pain is like having a Benihana chefs chopping away and it's darn nasty looking, but worse I've already scaring of the cornea after the second infection and have lost some vision.

Simple information: http://www.stlukeseye.com/Conditions/HerpesSimplex.html

Re: Herpes Simplex Eye Disease

J-L.P I know this won;t help much but most of us got HV1 when children :S, and most everyone has it (Worldwide rates of HSV infection are between 65% and 90% see here)
THe problem is when we get a cold or our immune defenses are low, then HSV1 is reactivated causing herpes zoster and that is the painful part.

*hugs*

Re: Herpes Simplex Eye Disease

This is like reading about nits... my eye is feeling all watery just reading about this...

Ouch to you J.L-P... stay away from miss J.L-P - though I guess you know that...

As an aside, the eye (membrane) is a very common route of primary and opportunistic infections, as it is wet, accessible, and leads straight in, as it were. People always think mouth and nose, but forget the eyes.

Re: Herpes Simplex Eye Disease

I got it for the first time a few months back, and it was stress related. Horribly painful, I feel for you.

What makes me cross is that the person who has the active disease did not inform you about the risk, surely that's the bare minimum? Must be costing you a fortune in meds and check-ups, really rubbish!

I'm aware of the statistics, as I've spent quite a bit of time reading up on this. Unfortunately, I fall in the 10% who never had it and my infection is related to that person in August.

***Thank you for the kind replies.*** I am just very worried (as is my Doctor), having 3 occurences in such little time is a lot for someone who is fairly healthy. There is a Catch 22 with the medication unfortunately, it helps, but also reduces resistance (doesn't seem like I have much anyway). As with anything, we'll just have to try to find a strategy. I go back in 10 days to see if we've slowed down this bout and to see how much destruction has occurred.

Yes, me too. If occurences continue at this rate I will need a transplant. In terms of financial costs, you've said most of it- when I miss work, I am not paid.

Well I'm going to learn to drive as quickly as possible so I can be the chauffeur on days where the eye is really bad.

Well Kittster the thing is that not many people are aware of it as it is a sort of "invisible" disease until you get an Herpes Zoster attack

Re: Herpes Simplex Eye Disease

Well, if the person knew, then shame on them. If not, well, I guess bad stuff happens. What shocks me is when I hear people who know they have a disease and they have absolutely no knowledge about it! Especially for contagious diseases, that's just selfish stupidity.

Re: Herpes Simplex Eye Disease

My fiance has it (cold sores)and when i found out i was ignorant and thought it was such a huge deal. I thought its like other stds that usually promiscuous people get...before reading up on it. Our helpers had it and they were lesbians (true story) and we never talked about it but they had outbreaks quite frequently year and it was just nasty and awkward and they were taking care of my nephews, i was glad when we had to let them go. Well my fiance had an outbreak last year and im just nowwaiting for my turn. I dont have a choice right? Ive accepted it that i will have it as well.

Sorry, I don't get it, you were glad when you had to let them go because they were lesbians or because they had herpes?

Re: Herpes Simplex Eye Disease

Because they had herpes, but also because they were getting wilder(they were just coming out of the closet the younger one just turned 18) that time when we noticed the herpes after they´ve been working for us for years. The neighborhood were talking about them. Like i said, i didnt know much about herpes because its not very common there, im not sure if its mor prevalent in cold countries? But i dont know any other people with herpes there besides the two mentioned.

You were just about to accuse me of being homophobic right? sorry to disappoint but im still friends with those 2 girls. Im just worried that they dont even know about herpes, (they were very poor) and they are very playful with the kids not knowing they are contagious.

Re: Herpes Simplex Eye Disease

Sorry i had to describe them because being lesbian with cold sores is not enough reason to be glad that they stopped working as nannies for us. Dont want to look like a homophobe. But still curious if herpes is common only in cold countries?
