Looking for a good Obstetrician in Bern

Hi, I recently (like a week ago) found out that I'm pregnant, and I'm looking for a good obstetrician in Bern, preferably one who speaks English if possible. I don't have a hausartz, as I normally (but not often) go to the sanacare clinic in town and see various doctors there whenever I need to. When I found out I was pregnant, I called the resident gynecologist there and she referred me to the women's hospital at Inselspital. After my appointment there, they sent me back to the gynecologist who again told me to go back and get everything done with the hospital because she cannot help me. OK, I can understand if she doesn't deal with pregnancies but as a doctor she could have at least recommended a few doctors who do right? But no... she simply said I should get everything done at the hospital from now on.

Now... I thought about calling the hospital up and asking if they had doctors that I can see for advice and just on a general basis for pregnancy concerns... like what is and isn't normal... what I should and shouldn't do or eat... and recommendations for classes and courses and when I should start taking them etc. But since I'm still quite early in the pregnangy and not particularly in a hurry, so I hoped maybe some experienced forumers might also have recommendations for me? Or should I just do it all at the hospital? I would really like to hear your advice

Also I know I should probably write a new insurance thread but I thought maybe I could tack on my other question here: What does/doesn't my basic health insurance cover in terms of pregnancy healthcare??

THANKS HEAPS
Bell

Re: Looking for a good Obstetrician in Bern

Congratulations on the good news!

Not living in Bern, I cant help with the docs.

If you read some of Nils posts about her recent pregnancy, you'll find that she had basic health insurance, then paid a little more to have a private room during the hospital stay.

Docs sometimes dont want to see you (or.. well.. they didnt want to see me, as i was reasonably "low risk") before about 4-7 weeks post ovulation.

Sit tight, get a few books on amazon like "what to expect when you are expecting"
Do a search on this site about pregnancy (there are a few threads), find a few pregnancy calenders online..
And dont tell your boss for another few weeks yet.

Re: Looking for a good Obstetrician in Bern

Thanks Rangatiranui for actually replying even though you don't know any doctors. I totally understand that not many live in Bern, mostly in the big cities or their outskirts. I had a look at the list of doctors and gynecologists on the web but there were so many, it's hard to pick who we think might be good or possibly really bad. Sometimes spoilt for choice is a terrible thing.

I'll start looking at books... and yea, I'll wait a few weeks before I tell my boss... But I cant leave it too late cos I need to give him a chance to organise extra help... I work in a kitchen and the work is heavy so I probably wouldn't last long as more time passes. I think I'm around about 6 weeks in... though the doctor I went to for a scan couldn't say for sure because it was too early.

In any case... I'll just keep browsing... I'm very wary of internet websites cos they often have lots of contradicting advice...

Re: Looking for a good Obstetrician in Bern

Congratulations!!

I can recommand the following obstetrician, I know her for more than 20 years now. Never had a problem.

I don't know if she still takes new clients but you can give a try and otherwise ask her to recommand you someone else. I'm totally confident with her, but that's my own appreciation.

Good luck

Re: Looking for a good Obstetrician in Bern

FMX, I called your OB, and she doesn't do Geburtshilfe anymore. It's ok... the receptionist gave me the phone number to another Dr in town. It's a guy, and while I don't think it's a bad thing, I'm more comfortable with a lady. I'll call him sometime to find out though.

jhyn21, Thanks for the referral... I'll give her a call next week and find out if she will still take new clients

My wife had our first baby in October, in Bern, delivered by

He seemed like a really nice guy to me, spoke great English. My wife (Swiss), was really happy with him. He's been her Gyno for 20 odd years.

Re: Looking for a good Obstetrician in Bern

Oh yea if you would like to have a pregnancy and birthing lessons too in English (private) I could recommend a midwife her name is Yvonne Studer Badertsche, here is her contact info:

Have read a lot of articles in the net as well as books but it was still great to talk to her about all the other questions I have about pregnancy and birth. And I think thats covered by the Health insurance
