Anti sweat solution for baby car seat ???

The cushion of our baby seat is heating up somehow so little one is always quite sweaty and warm after a short time.

What can be done? So far I'm covering the seat with a light cotton towel, but maybe someone on the forum has a better and smarter solution.

Thanks

Yes, but they get shaved regularly. I cannot shave either my little one or the baby car seat

Re: Anti sweat solution for baby car seat ???

Without being able to offer up anything concrete I have a couple of thoughts/observations.

I always remember old men advocating the wearing of string vests throughout the whole year - in winter they trapped the warm air next to the body, and in summer, the reverse, keeping the body cool. May be there's an equivalent garment that you could adapt and use.

The other is that many taxi drivers and other professional drivers favour a mat of beads.

You haven't given the age of your child, but just by writing "baby", I guess it is probably too small for this to be a viable option - even if a smaller, gentler equivalent could be found or improvised. As I wrote this I now also think that, if not well made, it could become a choking hazard .... d'oh.

EDIT: - just typed this into Google: "keeping babys car seat cool" and some of the results may be helpful, of which this seemed relevant:

Re: Anti sweat solution for baby car seat ???

Thanks so much for your reply. The link is really great.

Baby is 13 months, so the beads are for the moment not an option. Another thing I tried is covering the seat with a sports garment (breathable T-shirt).

I was hoping to receive some "out of the box" ideas from other parents, as I think everyone has this problem in summer. The covering of the seats are rarely in breathable fabric.

Re: Anti sweat solution for baby car seat ???

I seem to remember that maxi cosi sell a special summer cover made from towelling material

http://maxi-cosi.com/Products/Access...Cabriofix.aspx

so the towel option would seem very wise

Re: Anti sweat solution for baby car seat ???

It's the heat of the summer sun, not my style of driving.

I would love to find the switch of the sun though, at times it really gets rather hot in Switzerland (not to think how rich it would make me).

Our car has a/c, but cooling down and getting baby out of the car in warmer temperature (constantly) ends up in a cold

Re: Anti sweat solution for baby car seat ???

Armandair,

every major car seat manufacturer now sells summer cover for the car seat, our Brittax/Romer also had one, it is handy to buy as a supplement.

It is made of towel material (stretchy jersey), you just pull it on. It is white/light gray or baby blue, usually, so sunlight does not make it very hot, either, soaks up the sweat and keeps the little one cool. Good stick on window shades also help.

As with rain coats for pushchairs, I am sure there are a number of fit/all generic summer coats you can see, check out large French/German supermarkets, or, if you want to go small distance and pay more, your general baby stuff store will probably have one or two for you to check out.

In the above posts, there are links for some great products.

I just wanted to hear some voices from the practical side, before buying something.

starfish has made some interesting contributions
Re: Anti sweat solution for baby car seat ???

A towel (or summer seat cover) is probably the best solution.

But as gets quite warm here, we also use these rabbits (cotton / filled with barley).
To cool them, you just toss them (in a ziplock bag) in the freezer. And then they go everywhere: bed, car, stroller, etc. (Also on little bumps).
They can be kept in a cooler box in the car.

(In winter they go in the microwave.)

I guess you can find similar stuff in Switzerland.
Or you can easily make them yourself. They can also be filled with rice.

I had a wet terry cloth pinned over a slighty open car window, right above my child, so the window was blocked by a wet terry, it worked wonders (we drove some 12hrs one trip a couple times in summer with under 1yr baby).

Then I let her play with wet wash cloth while we drove. I also took some frozen fruits to gnaw on, great if teething.

It is never good to have an icy cold aircon blowing on your baby, though.

Sweat is a terrific self regulatory temp system. I wouldn't worry so much about sweat, just take a pair of dry clothes and change your baby. I would concentrate on how to cool the temp in the car a bit and hydrate your child a lot, give her/him some saltier soups or so, so he/she back up on minerals (that are often lost through sweating) and increase thirst. Sweat in summer is absolutely normal, some babies sweat a lot more than others, though, just like big people. I have a sweaty baby, too, anytime she eats or sleeps, she runs through a pair of clothes.

Re: Anti sweat solution for baby car seat ???

Thanks so much for your answer, which is impeccable as always

I spent the last summer like this, as little one was not so long in the car.
This year we plan some majors trips and I need a better solution.

I'm not so worried about the sweaty baby or me not being able to cope.

The problem is really the seat itself. The fabric they use is not breathable nor good enough in hot/warm temperatures. As a result the whole back of the baby is really wet after only 10 min. And we only have 20c now.

I think I will buy the coating suggested in some of the posts above.

Re: Anti sweat solution for baby car seat ???

I wouldn't maybe use towel, but two terries instead, to lay under your child, test it and see if it works...The seat cover is the same thing, basically.

We always drove over night when we drove longer than 2hrs, time it well and baby sleeps through, completely. Then, at the end of the trip, just change your baby? But, it is true, our baby always sweated in the car seat, even in winter.

I always had special juicy things prepared for our child, too, in case she woke up (which was rare, I did nurse so it was easy to calm her back to sleep), cubes of cold melon, cold peeled apples, long bits of cucumber, cold carrot, cool tea, watered down juice, etc. I packed a little Tchibo cooler bag.

Over all, I was shocked how well kids adapt, it is usually adults (ehm, moms) that fret.
