From SK (Canada) to Kindergarten or Grade 1?

Hi,

My son is in Senior Kindergarten (Canada) now and would have gone to Grade 1 in September. But, in two months we are moving to Switzerland and he will start school in Oberweningen (kanton Zurich) in August. Because his birthday is not until September, the school wants him repeat the second year of Kindergarten. Even though he doesn't speak German yet (he's bilangual Dutch and English), we are afraid he will get bored in Kindergarten. He's already learning how to read and write and doing some math here and, if I understand the Kanton Lehrplan correctly, they don't start with that until Grade 1.

Does anyone here have experience with a similar situation?

Hi Amanda.

I can't help you with your specific question but I am sure that someone on EF will be able to steer you in the right direction.

I saw your address. My mother is living in Glen Abbey.

Good luck with your move.

Place him in the Kindergarten. It will do him a world of good with learning language and making friends, then when he starts Grade 1 his language skills and the fact that he has made friends will give him a good start.

Unfortunately, this seems like the right move. The schools here are very commmunication-based, and challenges with communications (different language) sadly sometimes get treated as overall poor performance.

On the other hand (depending on how long you stay here), once the language is masters, it is much easier in higher grades (secondary) to skip ahead if your child is taking an academic route.

Just my experiences, I'm sure other people have seen other situations as well.
