Schools in Basel

Any recommendations for schools in the Basel area? We are looking for a school for children ages 5-12 who speak English only. We would love a bilingual or language school as long as the children will not be overwhelmed. Are the public schools accomodating for English speaking students?

Re: Schools in Basel

Lots of discussion about this already - see the links below and also check through the search function.

What you decide to do is up to you, in that it depends on your mindset and plans, but there are at least 3 English-based international schools around Basel.

Views on these vary depending on who you talk to.

Swiss schools are generally accomodating to non-native language students.

Edited to add a couple of threads you should read (not in any particular order):

Swiss International School Basel - any good?

Not Basel related, but topic related:

Bilingual schools... But which one?!

This one you need to read the whole way through (warning plot spoiler: it all works out in the end):

Re: Schools in Basel

Welcome to the Forum.

Supporting what Carlos already said, before you ask any more questions I really hope that you will look at some of the information already on this board. General Info on each subject is often given in the Threads (Stickies) which remain at the top of each area. Honestly, it is worth opening them and seeing all the different subjects covered. After having had a good look at the Threads or links there which are relevant for you, you can do a simple search to see if you can find anything else already discussed here. The search function isn't brilliant but something like 'Schools Basel' brings up over 40 Threads. Obviously, many of them are not going to apply to your situation but a couple of them might contain the info you need.

And what goes for schools, also goes for housing, children coping with their first foreign language, the difference between written German and the language the people in Basel actually speak, obtaining work permits, how to register at the parish you live in, what you should definitely bring with you, where to dispose of your rubbish when you get here, how public transport works and pretty well everything else which you might need to find out about.

And if you DO have specific questions, it helps a lot of you give us the relevant facts so that we have something to work on. eg. Is the firm you will be working for prepared to pay the (very high) fees of an International School?

Happy hunting.

Short answer: yes. But don't bother if you're going to have fees paid, and you'll only be here a while.

Re: Schools in Basel

Try academia Bilingual School, small and caring. my son went for the past year which has given him a really good start with languages. He is now 14 so moved onto academia college. Real diverse mix of children from 4 to 14 years. payment plans available also if your company are not paying which helped us a lot. once basic german skills have been established they move onto one week english, one week in german. my son coped with this after about 6 months, the younger the better! good luck with your search Cheers, Julie
