My big fat greek wedding (literally!)

I had no idea. Especially with my family.

At least we managed to book a church and the catering. The reception is at our house so at least we didnt need to find a venue. Which is good because the venue we originally wanted was booked on the day. More than one year in advance! So was the church. People are organised in Cyprus!

But it took at least three days of constant (loud) discussions with around 10 members of my family to decide. The argument "its my wedding im supposed to do what i want" doesnt work i tried :P Fortunately im happy with the final result.

At least the wedding dress shopping is done. Problem is i have to choose between two. No i cant get both.

Now we need to find a bunch of certificates for the groom. And the baptism certificate which is the most important is not issued in his church! Anybody knows where i can get a plastic swimming pool?

We still need to organize a DJ and the decoration. Anything else i forgot?

Having seen the movie, I can tell you it is far worse in some cultures, especially in East Asia. Cheer up!

Re: My big fat greek wedding (literally!)

Hi Gata

Xronia Pola on your upcoming marriage!!!

We got married in Athens in the Greek Orthodox church which was
so so special. It took some paperwork but I think a bit less than the
Catholic church.I'm half Greek and hubby is Swiss so he had to get
proof that he was a Christian from the family's church minister.

I wish you luck and just have fun!!!

The movie is as true as it can get. To appreciate it you must be either Greek but have lived abroad for at least a few years, or you must be a foreigner but have lived with Greeks at least one year. Then you realize even the seemingly most exaggerated scenes are pure real life.

To Gata: Xronia Polla!

My experience of joining a turkish family is the same too. My wedding, the family, the food, etc...

Instead of a bunch of Nikky, it was a bunch of Mehmet.

Same story, different country.

Gata, let me know if you need a pool, do you want to borrow ours?

Good luck with the entire ordeal, the film is fun, though, hope you will have lots of it!

Re: My big fat greek wedding (literally!)

We lived in Singapore and we had our wedding in Greece.
800 guests! More than 100 of them from ard the world.
Yes, it was a big fat Greek wedding.

It was fun, crazy but so much fun.

My mother organized everything and we just showed up three weeks before the wedding. It saved us a lot of stress.

Family wants to be part of it and decide about almost everything. I was relaxed and said yes to all suggestions. At the end I think everything was to my satisfaction and everyone was happy.

I believe that the most important thing is to have fan at your wedding.
Try not to control everything yourself (take that from a control freak) and keep all family members busy.

Na zisete!

Ohhh and I would like to add a few things like: hair, make up, food, flowers, photographer, art de la table, weather prognosis, bobonieres ( sorry I don't know the word in English), invitations. We had the ceremony procedure translated for our guest from abroad (not only the words but also the symbolism) and it helped a lot.

Re: My big fat greek wedding (literally!)

I love big fat Greek weddings but I hope you don't end up doing to your guests what just happened to us.

We had planned to go to the wedding of a good friend in Mytilini this July. We organised everything, multiple flights (some with airmiles, some booked), accommodation on the island and in Athens. My kids were excited about carrying the baskets of rice for the guests to throw. The whole thing was quite a logisitical operation. Once everything was set, our Greek friends emailed to say all the organisation had gotten too hard, they couldn't get the venue they wanted for the reception, and so they were postponing the wedding!

Undoing all that work was not an option, so it looks like we'll be having a nice family vacation on Lesvos this summer. Yay!
