After the kids are home(U.S.) will they want to return (CH)? Dreading this trip!

Here we are, almost a year since we arrived in CH, with plane tix to go back to the U.S. The children are really excited to return to their house with all its secret passageways, climbing gym in the garage, huge yard and gardens, woods galore, cats, stuff, their friends and family...

I did everything I could to make this a good year so that they would want to stay! And I succeeded, I think, in large part thanks to this lovely country and all the great people we've met...

But what happens when all their friends swarm them and shower them with love when we go back to the U.S.? Will they be very unhappy to have to return here 5 weeks later, to start their second year of schooling in CH?

Has anyone else out there had experience moving here but then returning to your hometown with your kids? What was that experience like?!

Thanks! I am really dreading going back, for fear they will never want to return here again afterwards!

They are thrilled to explore their house again, enjoy the space, meet friends etc. Then they are also thrilled to return to their other home and friends in Switzerland too! Don't worry so much-they don't!

Okay, mabern. I'll try not to stress about them. They'll be fine. They'll see their friends, rediscover old forgotten toys stuffed in remote closets, enjoy the pleasures of country paths and catching frogs.

Still, reassured as I am, I am finding I just don't want to go back. The dread remains...dunno why

Kids are way more adaptable than adults and can both enjoy the moment, and then forget it easily when the next exciting moment comes. They'll be fine.

I went back to Australia with my son after a year and he had no problems coming back to Switzerland. We've done it a 2nd time recently and it becomes like a holiday for them.

Sounds like it is you more than them? It was actually exciting for me the first time, but incredibly stressful because you try to squeeze everything and everyone in one short period. In the end I was exhausted and needed a holiday from my holiday. Second time it starts to feel strange, a bit of disconnection to the old life....

Hmm. I think maybe I've spent so much time in Europe over the years, that I've reached the disconnection phase. The children are excited to go back to the U.S., but I'd really like to stay here and play in these beautiful mountains...

My kids are born and grown here, going to the US is like another planet!

They are really happy to return from the US weirdness!

Check it out! Tonight they tell me they don't want to leave! Summer is here and life is good! Maybe I don't need to worry so much after all...

Re: After the kids are home(U.S.) will they want to return (CH)? Dreading this trip!

Here we are again under sunny skies in Switzerland.

Well, for anyone in similar circumstances, here's what it was like for our family to return "home" to America after a year away.

The children were really happy to be back. They quickly met up with their old friends, gleefully unpacked their old toys, caught up with neighbors and family. The cats remembered us and killed lots of wildlife in our honor.

Then 5 weeks later, we packed up and headed back to CH. And here we are, 24 hours later. The children immediately found their friends and had a first great day in our Swiss neighborhood.

So far, no tears, no crises for the 4 children. We now have two homes essentially and lots and lots of good people in our lives.

I would say the difficult part is dealing with saying good bye to our American friends and family again, and the attitude some have in the U.S. about us choosing to live in Europe. But that would be a topic for a different post.
