Kids parks / playcentres / toddler groups

Hi everyone,

We have just moved to Meilen with our very active 18 month old daughter, and desperately looking for things to do with her during the day. I would really appreciate any recommendations for parks / playcentres / local toddler groups etc. I don't seem to be able to find a local park at all?

Also if anyone can recommend a Paedatrician in Meilen , that would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
Emma

Hi Emma

Hope you are settling in well after your move from Manchester. I moved over from Manc about 8 years ago. I used to go to the St Andrews playgroup which is based near the Kunsthaus in Zurich - I'd really recommend it - I met lots of very good friends there. There's lots of playgrounds around - the Artergut Park is lovely and the playground in Küsnacht near to the Schiffstation is also worth a trip. Lots of the Badis also have paddling pools suitable for young kids. Not sure about places in Meilen - I'm sure other people will be able to advise on that.

Hi Emma

We live down the road in Stafa (my two are 3.5 and 10 months), so welcome to the area!

There is an English speaking playgroup at the Elki (Eltern Kind Zentrum) in Stafa every Tuesday between 9.30 and 11am. Snacks are given to the kids and there is usually some singing, although if the weather is nice, the kids like to play outside. First week is free, otherwise it is 3CHF or 5CHF is you have a tea/coffee.

If you would like more details, send me a PM. I am hosting next Tuesday, so I will be there if you wanted to come by and say hello.

Not sure of the name of the kids doctor in Meilen, but check out www.doktor.ch and you will be able to find your local ones details on there.

Hi Emma, welcome to Meilen. We love it here.

My daughter goes to Dr Patric Eberle. I think he is fantastic. He also speaks English very well and is very inclusive of parents when it comes to working out what is wrong. In other words, he doesn't just lay down the law or assume he always knows what is happening. I really appreciate this after my daughter ended up in the children's hospital with pneumonia. Having someone go that extra mile for you is absolutely priceless.

While not a playgroup, there is a wonderful twice monthly coffee morning for international women in Meilen. It's every second Friday morning. You pay 5chf for room rental, tea/coffee/cake, small children are welcome and it's a wonderful way to meet other English speakers living here. Send me a PM (private message) if you would like more info. I don't run it, but I love going and have made some wonderful friends there.

I also used to take my daughter to playgroups at the church hall in St Andrews church, near Stadelhofen. They are a great way to meet people, for both you and your child.

For local parks, the best bet is the Strandbad, which has a playground and a cafe. Or there is a new playground on Ormistrasse. There is also a playground behind the Allmend School, on Ormistrasse.

Otherwise, there are also Swiss mother/toddler groups, which take place in the DOP (big old school building in the centre of Meilen).

Good luck settling in,

Kate

Hi Emma,

For a rainy day, check out "Kindercity" in Volketswil (www.kindercity.ch) easy access by train/bus and car). Play paradise for kids.
