Anyone familiar with La Cote international school?

Hello All,

Just curious if anyone has any experience with the La Cote international school. We will be new to the Vaud region this year and my son will be entering year 3 this year and we were accepted at the school.
thanks

Re: Anyone familiar with La Cote international school?

Its a very new school, just started a few years ago in the area. I'm not sure it has the facilities to compete with the other international schools in the area, but I know some parents who sent their children there who seem reasonably happy with it.

Thanks LR!
Per their website they are opening a new facility in 2012, but for now if they are at least in a nice neighborhood and the children seem happy and safe I could cope with some growing pains.

Re: Anyone familiar with La Cote international school?

I believe it has been in its new building for over a year now I think - owned by the Nord Anglia Education Group (who also own College du Leman, Beau Soleil and Champittet according to their website).

We went to a function there last year and were impressed. My wife also saw them featured on Swiss TV the other day involved in the 'Champions' celebration in Lausanne with Bastien Baker and Stephane Lambiel (skater). Their choir is performing? Seems to be doing rather well in what must be a very competitive market at the moment.

Edited to add: Apologies, this was an old thread and I didn't realise

Re: Anyone familiar with La Cote international school?

Is there anyone out there with more up to date info about the school? We are moving to the area for September and from info online were considering for our kids. Was out in early December and got talking in a bar with a former teacher who was certainly not positive about the senior end of the school. Any advice on this or rival school Gems most welcome.

Just giving this a little boost? Looking for objective info about these two schools.

Re: Anyone familiar with La Cote international school?

Hi DylanD. We (wife and I) have heard both favorable and less favorable comment about both schools. Certainly if you have kids of school age a visit is advisable.

La Cote has had significant change in its ranks recently, from the Principal and Head of Secondary ‘moving on’ and staff resigning/leaving - mainly across the high school end (secondary in Brit speak) as we understand it. Many staff left (sone good ones we have heard) and around 20 staff moved on in the summer. Primary seems more settled but can’t comment with experience of that age group.

GEMS has also seen change with a new head recently (2 years?) and it has more facilities than La Cote but has struggled a bit with numbers but is now growing.

Both have their merits and as I said, both should be visited....but do so with ‘eyes wide open’ as there is still much dinner table gossip (the most dangerous type...) going on.

We see socially parents and some staff in the area and its interesting times in International Schooling currently; much choice and seemingly a considerable sea of mediocrity and excellence out there. If you can find parents who have their children at one around the lake that’ll be a good start to get some inside information.

Oh, and pubs always a good starting point

Good luck with it.

Thanks Wile7, this bit confirms what I heard. She said 50%+ of secondary staff left this summer. And that even this academic year, teachers in Maths and Science left before Xmas? Many of these teachers were running senior exam classes? We are coming (most recently from the Middle East) where staff turnover is already an issue, but a good school keeps turnover down to 10%.

Do you know if there is a similar issue at the Gems school?

Re: Anyone familiar with La Cote international school?

My child attends LCIS and I have to say that I haven't experienced any problems with the school at all. The Head of Secondary came into the school last year and looked at the teaching staff and decided who should stay and who should go. The school was transformed almost overnight by the departure of many of the teachers and now the students and other staff seem happier. I would definitely advise you to go and have a look at the school and see what you think. We did look at GEMS when we moved to the area, but we chose LCIS because it's a smaller building and there's much more personal attention.

Thanks very much, that's good to read. Are your children at the senior end of the school? I am interested in the DP programme in the next few years and the impression I have is that the school is not very academic. Kids are happy but this is largely because teachers don't expect much from them? Not much homework or testing? Lots of projects and fun and games? I have since read on another private forum that the school is more like a 'summer camp' than a serious school, fine for primary/lower high school, especially for kids who might struggle in other schools? We will certainly visit with the kids in the Spring, but I think we'll also to need to look a bit further afield in Lausanne.

Re: Anyone familiar with La Cote international school?

My daughter is in Primary, but a close friend of mine has her children in upper Secondary and the DP. She is delighted with the school and her child is only applying for Russell Group universities in the UK. I also know that the school has had children go to Cambridge and EPFL and that they have exams in January and June. I certainly don’t get the impression that it’s a summer camp.

Dylan I can't help you at all with your request but just a word of caution. You have got a very favourable answer from a Person who has only joined yesterday and only posted in this thread. Yesterday was the first day of work for most People this year. So. Caution

Very true. Everyone has to join at sometime though and I can only speak from my experience.

Thank you. Yes I have become very aware of how much schools in Switzerland must be paying to manage their web profiles via paid Google listings, marketing teams writing 'independent' reviews, massaged Facebook accounts etc. But you only learn about this in private conversations. In Dubai, schools are independently inspected and everything is public via https://whichschooladvisor.com/uae. I wish Which School Advisor were available in Switzerland!
