| | First Prenatal check-up @ 8th week
Hello, i will visit my OBgyne for the very first time in Baden this week. Im very anxious on what they would do and excited on what ill find out about my babyeven though its still pretty early. Will they do internal exam? Ultra sound? Sonogram? I guess id have to expect a pap smear right?
What´s the standard here for the first prenatal check-up?

Hello and Congratulations Stephanie!
It's very routine in most OB's where you will get your pap, they will take some blood to confirm that you are pregnant and other blood samples, blood pressure etc... They'll usually also ask you for your blood identification card, if you don't have one already. It's basically a card that is created to confirm your blood type (and they'll want one from your husband as well to understand the RH factor - if you two have negative and positive blood types - it will require an extra shot around the 26th week or so). And finally most will do the ultrasound just to see that cute little circle of joy that's growing in your tummy.
Congratulations! Enjoy these months to the fullest!

I think it can very between doctors but at my initial visit they checked my weight, blood pressure, urine then did an internal ultrasound to ensure baby was in the correct place and did a smear test. If you are seeing the doctor for the first time they will probably take some family history as well.
Good luck, I remember being amazed that I could see my baby at such an early stage (for me it was 5 weeks and the 6 the second time).

Congrats Stephanie!
I am pretty sure they will give you some blood work, simple urine test and an ultrasound, the transvaginal one - sorry I know it is not the nicest term but it is the correct one.
Best wishes!

Thanks Whindian and Pepper. So it is mandatory that my husband is with me on the first visit. I bet it will be a long one, discussing medical history, blood samples from both of us, etc. I dont have a blood id, i lost it few yrs ago. But im not afraid of needles, afraid of papsmears though! I really would like to see my baby and glad to know they let us take a peek as early as 5 weeks. |

Hi Stephenie,
If you can read some German, this website is pretty useful: http://www.swissmom.ch/. Of course there is tons of information on the internet in English (I like http://www.babycenter.com/), but Swissmom has specific information about what's normal here, what's covered by the basic insurance and so forth. This page talks specifically about the first pregnancy check-up.
I think with the blood type your husband's blood type only comes into question if you have Rh-negative blood. If yours is Rh-positive there is no issue.
Congratulations and best of luck!
W.

Congrats!
My experience is similar to those above: they will ask for a urine sample (to check your Hcg pregnancy hormone level and also glucose/protein levels), take a blood sample to test for some routine things (blood group if not known, haemoglobin levels, HIV, etc.), weight, blood pressure, an internal vaginal check (if not a full smear in case you already had one recently, then they at least test for any infections, e.g. chlamydia) and then finally the bit you are waiting for: an internal ultrasound.
In the ultrasound at that stage you should be able to see the little tadpole with budding arms and legs, and also see the little heart pumping away, and they will confirm that growth is as expected for dates | The following 3 users would like to thank jot for this useful post:

If you are Rh-negative, you will receive an anti-D shot somewhere around 28 weeks, if memory serves me right, and also within a few hours after the birth if the baby is indeed Rh-positive (to prevent your blood producing anti-bodies that would attack the baby's (or any future baby's) potentially Rh-positive blood).

Your husband can of course go with you but no one has ever wanted to carry out any blood tests on my husband, he came with me for support. At my very first appointment I had no idea what would be done and was really upset that I had seen the baby and my husband hadn't so from that point of view it's good if he can attend.

Congratulations, Stephanie!
I'm currently a little over 5 months pregnant.
At your first visit, your doctor should also give you a prescription for prenatal vitamins and perhaps a magnesium supplement. (I've found that the magnesium really helps to prevent night-time leg cramping and constipation). Also, they'll probably start doing only the external ultra-sounds after you are a bit further along (maybe 3 months or so).
Again, congratulations! And I hope your pregnancy goes very well! | This user would like to thank Pancakes for this useful post:

Congrats, stephanienie, fab news. Another thing they will do is plan your next visits for all the necesarry check ups, my doc did at least. Hubs does not have to be there, but it is better if he is, for some seeing what is growing inside you might help them adjust to the idea of parenting and might be more understanding of all the changes you go through (moods, cravings, etc..). | Quote: | | | | | Now if only they could vibrate... | | | | | Noooooo....they are too huge.
