Benadryl or similar for babies

Anyone know if you can get Benadryl or a similar over the counter medicine here that is suitable for treating hives in babies? I've tried asking at the Apotheke and I was sold a tube of homeopathic ointment that has only helped slightly . I'd like to try asking for a specific product. Thanks

You should give your pediatrician a ring in the morning and ask what he/she thinks. Possibly they will suggest something, perhaps they will want to see the child. If your druggist is recommending homeopathic anything then their credibility just went out the door.

Re: Benadryl or similar for babies

I have to be blunt here. Where young children are concerned, especially babies, if you are not 100% sure of what to buy over the counter then consult your Dr at the earliest.

I say this as a BIG homeopathy fan but only for myself as it's my choice for my body but not where kids are concerned.

Hope your little one will be right as rain very soon.

Thanks. A homeopathic ointment wasn't my first choice either, but I know they are quite keen on homeopathy here and the pharmacist is always my first port of call for minor issues so I thought why not. I couldnt find any alternative brand names for Benedryl on the interweb so will give the paediatrician a quick call before resorting to asking my mum to send some Benedryl over!

You're probably better off to call the pediatrician, but I did find this list on the web. My guess is that it might require a prescription. Not sure, however.

Switzerland: Bedorma; Benadryl¤; Benocten; Benylin Paediatric¤; Comprimes somniferes “S”; Comprimes somniferes formule 533¤; Dobacen¤; Neo-Synodorm¤; Sleepia;

Re: Benadryl or similar for babies

Thanks again all. Just to finish off this story, I took my daughter to Krippe today and was sent away as another child had gone down with 'ringelrote' (I think ringworm) so seeing her red patches they though she must have it too... eek!

Of course I dashed off to the doctor who said not ringworm, just hives as we thought, probably caused by having a cough, maybe also hot weather. She gave me anti-histamine drops called 'Feniallerg'. I don't know whether it's available OTC or just on prescription.

Interestingly she thought the homeopathic ointment the Apotheke gave me was a good one but would not have helped in this situation because it was probably not a reaction to an external substance.

Re: Benadryl or similar for babies

Glad to hear that you got to the doctor and were prescribed the right medication. However, if your Doctor honestly thought that the homeopathic "treatment" was good, you may also want to consider changing doctors... Homeopathic medicine can only possibly work through the placebo effect, so if you are giving it to a little one who can't possibly understand this then it isn't going to do any good.
