You guys kidding right? Do you know the abuse honey melons take throughout their lives? People always grabbing, poking and smelling in the melon's private parts, just to check whether they are ripe? People should go to jail for that!

How annoying is this?! And I had such a low iron-in-the-blood count, my GP was surprised I was alive. Was forced to swallow iron pills with the morning citrus juice. Now looking longingly at the iron on the board.

P.S. Is there such a thing as a partial blood exchange, you think?! Blood group A, by the way. ;-)

Prions aren't even really alive, so they are pretty much indestructible. My wife tells me that they can't even be reliably destroyed (denatured) by burning.

As far as I am concerned, the problem is the complete misunderstanding and political fallout, from the Mad Cow Disease problem. Which CJD is similar to but not the same as.

There's a standard questionnaire that the prospective donor is required to fill out, preferably truthfully, and one of the questions is whether you lived in the UK for a certain amount of time between certain dates -- irrespective of nationality.

I was wondering - and have wondered - the same thing.

If I ever go and visit a doctor I'll put it on the list of things I want to ask. Surely a quick blood test - and a certificate to say your "clean" should do the trick

The same thing happened to me in the US some 6-7 years ago. I wanted to donate blood and was refused just because I lived in Europe before.

Maybe the guys you know have seen more than 3 weeks of sun per year and have a good set of teeth; you'd never know they were Brits in that case

The same thing happens when one put the cross in the section "gay". Your blood goes into the sewage system. I guess they take statistics very, very seriously. Mind you, red cross is very open about it, they dont hang out a big board "Gays s0d 0ff", but it comes quite close to it. (*insert fatalistic smiley here*).

It amuses me to tell them that virtually everyone in Britain is eligible to give blood.

Maybe you could give blood the next time that you're home.

My sons have been banned from giving blood although they've never lived in England. Apparently all those dutiful trips home to visit the grandparents add up to enough over the years to put them on the 'black spot' list.

They're not alive at all, prions are molecules, basically misfolded proteins. The fatal thing is that they serve as nucleation points: they force properly folded (functional) proteins to misfold as well. This leads to a chain reaction where more and more of this misfolding occurs, cells die and the brain degenerates.

There was a blood test published by a research group in 2005 but it's not yet on the market. Biopsies of the tonsils or the spleen are used for diagnosis I think.

I'd have to concur that zymogen clearly knows what she's talking about here. I gave up biology as my first subject.
