Bloody annoying... [British blood donor offer refused due to CJD risk]

So the Swiss Blood Donation mobile service turns up in a Red Double decker bus at Stadelhofen. Fresh from my visit to the Optometrist , feeling charitable , and feeling the blood levels in my alchohol are within limits, I stroll up and offer them a pint of best. A quick exchange of Nurses from Fierce Swiss only to liberal English speaking staff then explains that they refuse to take blood from people who have lived in England because of the risk of CJD...

Bleeding cheek ! Pun intended.

What's a "bood"? I need to know so I can make sure if I have any laying around I can donate it too.

wow. Interesting though. The US considers all of Europe to be infected with Creuzfeld-Jakobson disease / Mad Cow Disease. I believe the rules in the US are even if you've eaten beef anywhere in Europe that you can't donate blood.

edit: I just checked... here's the rule.

Possible indefinite deferral for donors who have lived in or visited the United Kingdom or Europe for a total time of 3-6 months since January 1, 1980, depending on exactly where the donor traveled and how long he or she was there.

Yeah same here at work - sometimes you do get it with a date limit (i.e. before year 2000 in England or whatever) but its pretty across the board.

The thing I like about it is the actual risk of dying from cjd is miniscule, literally tiny, but its such a bloody awful way to go that people have an exaggurated fear of it. Still, you can't blame them in reality - if they did take your blood and you were a carrier because it has such long incubation period, then they'd look like right turkeys so better safe than sorry I guess...

Having spent time in the Caribbean and Africa, high risk areas, BT organisations all over the world have still taken my blood and used it for research, plasma etc. It doesn't have to go to people once donated.

How can they expect people to give blood after you just sent them their tax bills ? There'll be nothing left after the taxman is done...

You could always donate for yourself, just in case you're considering an operation in the next few months

The thing is that for diseases caused by viruses and bacteria you can test for them, for prion diseases there is no standardized testing and I am pretty sure the incubation period is very long...
You are right, one thing is research, another one is donation for the red cross

Re: Bloody annoying...

Mad Cow disease? Wow, is the fear still alive and kicking? Anyone knows how many proven cases showed up in UK after the big crisis of the end of the 90's (they said it took between 10 to 20 years for the first symptoms to show)? I never thought that would be something to be afraid nowadays...

Well, I think you deserve a cookie and the orange juice even though you didn't give the blood. It was a very nice gesture!

I was always a little confused by the whole BSE scare. I'm pretty sure we've all been eating scrapie-infected lamb for centuries.

Re: Bloody annoying...

and you're annoyed for that ?

I need to give my blood away because I have too much Iron in it. I'm around my 25th bleedings now and i will have to do it, less often I hope, all my life.

And all that good blood is destroyed, because of the Iron. Even now, when they are missing blood. (and I'm perfectly healthy, just this Iron problem)

not sure how up to date this count is: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/460544_4.

I thought it was past the 140's by now.

Quote from site:

"A total of 137 cases of vCJD have been reported so far; 99 were confirmed, 30 are viewed as probable, 3 are pending, and 5 patients are still alive, thus preventing a formal diagnosis that can be obtained only at autopsy.[1] The good news in this dire scenario is that the number of vCJD cases has been rising very slowly when compared with the past extent and speed of transmission of BSE in cattle. Educated guesses estimate that the number of future cases may be about 40 to 540 in the next 80 years, and some believe that if the incubation period in humans is sufficiently long, many of those subjects that have been infected may die of other causes, long before vCJD manifests itself."

I seem to recall at one time there was a figure of possibly half a million human incubators of the disease but this has been greatly revised down as you can see. The incubation period is long which is why they are never totally sure whats going to happen. If its 40 years then we could still face the peak but as the rate of infections is now dropping possibly it was shorter.

Still an agonizing way to go which is why it induces such fear, but compared to for example road deaths each year, the figure is negligible but telling people they are far more likely to be hit by a bus than get vCJD doesnt do it because a bus is a nice easy painless way to die.

I used to joke with my parents that the whole mad cow disease was a loby from the pig farmers. Then the pigs got swine flue, so we started joking it was the cow loby taking revenge. When the avian flu showed up, we started looking over our shoulders, afraid of the vegetarian terrorists...

Perhaps an urban myth, but I once heard donations from heavy drinkers are welcome, due to the positive affect when given to trauma victims...

I'm kinda happy they don't take chances.

I still can remember the shock 15 years ago, when I got a letter from the Redcross stating that I had potentially received blood transfusionswith HIV and/or Hep C. That was possibly the most stressfull two weeks of my life before I got the 'all is good' confirmation. Life would have been very different!
