gstaad visitor has no particular reputation at present
maternity hospital/unit Gstaad

I am coming to Gstaad on business for a week and I am 30 weeks pregnant. Just in case something goes wrong, I would like to have the name, address, and phone number of a local maternity hospital or hospital with an emergency room and maternity unit.
As I don't speak German, I'm really struggling to find somewhere online.
Can anyone help me please?
I am leaving on 27/7/11 so I need the info quickly.

Thanks so much,
Jenny

Re: maternity hospital/unit Gstaad

There is no hospital in Gstaad, and the closest hospital (in Saanen, which is the next town over, a quick 5 minute drive) is not always open for new patients. (website: http://www.spitalstsag.ch/spital-saa...ine-infos.html). There is a phone number, address, and email on the website. What I mean by "not always open" is that there's not always someone to unlock the door. The wife of an acquaintance of mine nearly had her baby in the parking lot on a snowy Sunday night two winters ago! That said, there are obviously doctors, nurses and such on call.

The closest 24 hour hospital is Spital Zweisimmen, about 25 minutes away from Gstaad by car. (http://www.spitalstsag.ch/spital-zweisimmen.html) They have an emergency room and maternity ward (gynaekologie/geburtshilfe), and the website lists the doctors as well as the address and phone numbers.

Hope this helps! I hope you don't need it!

Re: maternity hospital/unit Gstaad

gack! tried to edit but was too late (life with two kids!)

Okay, so talked to Swiss husband and apparently you cannot go to Saanen for births (no emergency room, no maternity ward), so the closest is Zweisimmen. Also, Zweisimmen was apparently the site of the near-parking-lot-birth (maybe, he can't remember).

Bottom line, you'll have to go to Zweisimmen for emergencies and deliveries.

Also, there is no neonatal ward there (german: neonatologie). So, for that you'd be going to Bern, most likely to the University hospital (Inselspital, http://www.kinderkliniken.insel.ch/12772.html?&L=4). Bern is about 1.5 hours from Gstaad by car.

Okay, for a city girl, this sounds a bit scary, but remember that (a) you are almost surely not going to need this and (b) the Swiss are excellent at logistics.

Sorry for the confusing first post, i hope this clears it up!

Re: maternity hospital/unit Gstaad

And make sure you have awesome travel insurance.... but I'm sure you won't need it...

If it makes you feel any better, I did a week's business trip in China when 32 weeks pregnant

There is also a 24 hour medical advice service. If you do feel that you need a doctor, just ask a local person to get the number for you for the area. They will be able to put you through to someone who speaks enough English to help you make decisions, and to refer you to an on-call doctor with the appropriate expertise...
